The MataBlog is edited by Matador Records’ co-moaner Gerard Cosloy and individual entries are the work of whoever’s name is next to them. If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

Our Annual Orgy of Self-Congratulation, Grandstanding & Overconsumption : Matador Artists & Staff Select Their 2015 Favorites

(above : 2nd annual Tidal board of directors meetings addresses burning issue #1 : failure to manipulate Matablog Year-End results. Guy in the helmet has a solution but nobody can hear him thru that thing)

Around this time every year, your long-suffering dedicated very good-looking editor attempts to coax a list of favorite recordings, books, television programs, life events, etc. out of the label’s artist roster and our show business cronies. In the past, the exercise has been an trying process, fraught with nagging, teeth-gnashing and no shortage of hesitant participants, some of whom actually changed labels or places of employment or their identities to avoid the task. In more recent times, however, people can’t wait to tell you everything. Too much, in fact. Why should the blitzkrieg of oversharing be limited to social media when we still have a label blog that attracts nearly a dozen 3 readers a week?

For some historical perspective, here’s last year’s selections. Questions or comments about our predictable tastes and/or inexplicable omissions are welcome (but probably not appreciated). And without further ado, let the coronations of Kendrick Lamar, Dick DIver and "The Leftovers" begin :

Radical Opening Bands of Tour
1) Perverts Again: Cleveland. Yes, so good. The front man had a really cool marching thing he was doing throughout the set, and the music was simple, primitive and catchy–sort of reminded me of The UV Race–most interesting / radical band of tour.
2) Night Club: Atlanta. I loved this band, very lonely sounding, very sparse, very dark. For lovers of Slint.
3) Perverted Justice: Montreal. This band tripped me out in a very good way. Old and new friends were formed that night. I've never seen anything like their setup. Five people formed a horizontal line behind Josie, lead vocalist. Starting from far right: Christine on vocals and synth, an electronic drummer next to her, another synth player next to him, and another dude next to him, but I forget what he played exactly. Each of them looked different. Cartoons playing instruments. They also covered GG–Don’t Talk to Me. Fantastic.
4) Mushmind: Tampa. Chaotic at times, but also a bit funky. Time Square was said to be a scary, grimy place in the 70's. This music could be an interesting soundtrack to that time in history. For more inquiry look for the track "Substance Control."
5) Brother Beast: NC. Vengeance against society. They are putting out a record called "Pregnant God" which I believe will be their last. Phenomenal drumming. Watch out.

6) Olivia Neutron-John: DC. Whoa. Beautiful music that conjured the new wave, the groove wave, the darker waves and the water waves all together–forming a synthetic punk version of rainbow light.
7) False Punk: Orlando. Rippers who are ripe on the scene, filled with angst, and look cool on stage. A lot of punks don’t think about how they look on stage, and that’s cool, but these guys look good. Members of Gross, who also played the show, and who also played with us the previous year. Good dudes, good tunes.
8 ) Triage: Toronto. This band really ripped. Female fronted thrash punk metal. The kind of shit you listen to driving fast through the night in New Jersey, flashing by nuclear waste dumps where Toxic Avenger was inspired.
9) VCR: Toronto. Second band in Toronto. Danger House vibes. Young kids with bad attitudes who like to play fast and freaky. Greg from S.H.I.T put out their EP, and had some funny shit to say. The singer and I spoke a bit while doing merch. Two quotes: "We're playing with Sheer Mag soon" which he was very excited about, and "We played this show to get money for tour." Best quote of tour yet so far.
10) Hide: Chicago. Extremely powerful Goth beautification. The sound was huge. The people were huger.

Robert Plant/Jack White - The Lemon Song - Lollapalooza, Buenos Aires

*Sparks/Franz Ferdinand - At some festival somewhere in Italy
*Cypress Hill - At some festival somewhere in South America
Health - They opened for Interpol on a US leg of the El Pintor tour, and destroyed it nightly.
*Sleaford Mods - At some festival in the UK or EU....
*The lines that divide and define have long since faded. I could simply reference the many tour books or the webnet for specific dates/places, but so could you.
Random:

OUT TODAY - EMA's Original Score for #HORROR, Music Video for "Amnesia Haze"

EMA's original score for the #HORROR is officially out today. Fact Magazine premiered the music video for “Amnesia Haze” which was directed by Severiano Martinez & EMA.

"We were looking for a track to fit in a scene for #HORROR where Chloe's character opens up her closet for all the girls to play dress up. Severiano had this instrument and I fell in love with it and wrote the top line.

Although it has a very "pretty" ethereal pop sound to it, I think of the lyrics as almost a eulogy. Kind of my 21st century version of 'Sweet Child of Mine'. Although of course my guitar solo is not quite Slash-worthy.

For the video we wanted something expansive, pristine and vast. I feel like these landscapes represent the distance of memory and some sort of unbreakable bond."

Algiers - Mute Studio Sessions

Algiers - Blood (Mute Studio Sessions)

stream via Spotify

"Blood"
"But She Was Not Flying"
"Remains"

"The Mute Sessions were undertaken as a way of using alternate instrumentation to accentuate different sonic and conceptual contours, which may not have been so heavily in the foreground in the album versions.
Tape manipulation, musique concrete and synthesizer programming were some of the techniques employed here."
"We endeavoured to strip a few of the songs of their machinations, as if re-sung from sheet music at the end of times to a tape loop and a broken piano."

Earlier this week, Algiers have been compiling a series of personal playlists on the band tumblr alongside photos from the past year of touring ;

"Samples Reconstructed" - Franklin James Fisher
"Autumn Leaves" - Franklin James Fisher
"Hip hop and other dystopias" - Ryan Mahan
"October Moods" - Lee Tesche

SAVAGES COVERED EAGLES OF DEATH METAL'S "I LOVE YOU ALL THE TIME" AT LA MAROQUINERIE

Savages played in Paris at La Maroquinerie on Tuesday to play songs from their upcoming album Adore Life. In addition, the band covered "I Love You All The Time" by Eagles of Death Metal, a track which all proceeds are donated to The Sweet Stuff Foundation.

For those of you who don't speak French (author of this post included):
"A year ago I was in LA and met some friends while they were working in the studio. They were recording on a song and I helped them a little bit with some lyrics in French. We had a really great day. Since then they've released their new album and tonight we would like to play you this song because the band was Eagles of Death Metal"

Archy & Jack Marshall - 'A New Place 2 Drown' - Book & Soundtrack, Short Film

News from the True Panther realm:
Earlier this morning  A New Place 2 Drown was announced. This multidisciplinary body of work includes a book, soundtrack (by Archy Marshall) and a short film, directed by Will Robson Scott (trailer above). The brains begin all this, Jack and Archy Marshall have shared details for all elements of this release below...

Following on from “Inner City Ooz,” last year’s collaborative art exhibition between Jack and Archy, which wove together music, visual art, and live performance, A New Place 2 Drown delves even deeper, drawing further from Jack’s discipline as a visual artist and Archy’s as a musician (under the pseudonym King Krule among others), to create something inimitable and entirely unique as a result.

The volume of poetry and artwork, published by Topsafe, invites readers into the brothers’ everyday lives in South London. By turns candid and tender, acute and distrait, ANP2D provides a glimpse into the creative process that Jack and Archy both share, and the restless, lyrical world that they inhabit.

Then, coming on the heels of the 208-page book is a stunning 37-minute, 12-song soundtrack of brand new music from Archy Marshall, released on December 10th on True Panther Sounds (US) / XL Recordings (UK). While intended as an essential companion piece to the book, the soundtrack showcases a different side to Archy’s musical craft, highlighting more evolved electronic production colored with Archy’s poetic verse delivered in his distinct baritone.

The entire project is tied together by a short film by Will Robson Scott, which incorporates elements of the book and the soundtrack, including behind-the-scenes interviews with the Marshall brothers and their mother.  View the trailer for the film HERE and visit the website to hear tracks from the soundtrack.

Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan on Marc Maron's "WTF"

Perhaps having tired of interviewing such nobodies as Lorne Michaels, CM Punk, Steve Albini, Tom Arnold, Matt Sweeney, The Amazing Jonathan and Barack Obama (sadly, not on the same episode), Marc Maron today welcomes Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan to the garage . Bob Odenkirk and David Cross stop by as well, though perhaps they were taped on different days. I have no idea how Marc feels about people hanging out in his driveway waiting to talk, but I don't think I'd like it one bit.

Coming Soon : the deluxe edition of Spoon's 'Gimme Fiction'

News flash for our friends beyond North America : Spoon's classic 'Gimme Fiction' celebrates its 10th anniversary with a deluxe limited-edition version on 180g double-LP, double-CD, released on Matador in early 2016 (Merge's domestic version will be available on December 11, as will Matador's digital download version). The reissue (released by Merge in 2005 and licensed/simultaneously released by Matador for territories outside of North America) contains the original album newly-remastered by Howie Weinberg from the original tapes, a second disc with 12 previously unreleased demos from the era, a digital download of nine additional bonus tracks, and a full-color book containing photos and an extensive oral history of the making of the album by The A.V. Club's Sean O'Neal. The deluxe LP package will also include a 24" x 36" poster and a digital download of all songs.

'Gimme Fiction' dragged the sonic pointillism of Kill the Moonlight further into dub-influenced weirdness as the increasingly confident Spoon went crazy in the studio, experimenting with everything from warped hip-hop samples to horse whinnies. Whatever digging or strange alchemy had to go into it, they only produced more gold.

'Gimme Fiction' deserves special recognition as the album where Spoon took creative and stylistic quantum leaps that resulted in classics "I Turn My Camera On," "The Beast And Dragon Adored," "My Mathematical Mind," "I Summon You" and so many more. 10 years later, 'Gimme Fiction' gets the deluxe vinyl release it so richly deserves.

Listen to and share the demo version of "Was It You?" and experience the oral history of 'Gimme Fiction' via the band's Tumblr, which includes videos, excerpts, and images from the album's creation and campaign.

Car Seat Headrest - 'Teens Of Style' Out Today, New January Dates Announced

(Sonic Boom, Seattle, 10/29/15)

It would be no exaggeration to say the amount of critical acclaim that's greeted today's release of Car Seat Headrest's 'Teens Of Style' has been equal parts awesome and overwhelming. For us, anyway.  If yesterday's KEXP session is anything to go by Will Toledo's ALL BUSINESS when it comes to this kinda thing and while "unflappable" in the dictionary used to have a picture of a bird encased in rubber bands, it will now feature a sketch of Will.  Preferably one of those Wall St. Journal style sketches, I've always liked those.

Anyhow, what oughta be a national sensation has now grown into a full-fledged INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT.  Check the dates below.

2 New Videos From HÆLOS, "Pray" & "Dust"

"Pray"

"Dust"

HÆLOS -- the London-based trio of Arthur Delaney (vocals), Dom Goldsmith (vocals, production) and Lotti Benardout (vocals) – are sharing new single “Pray” via Part II of their video trilogy. Together, with the new video for “Dust,” HÆLOS’ intriguing inaugural song, and the previously released video for “Earth Not Above,” this completes the band’s visual triptych. It’s a rare glimpse into the HÆLOS psyche as the band explores the modern big city life with the rituals and coping strategies that occupy the early hours.

Presenting a further taste of what’s to come from HÆLOS in 2016, “Pray” sees the enigmatic trio once again treading the fine line between darkness and euphoria as intensifying drum loops and cinematic strings form a backdrop for Lotti’s haunting and impassioned vocals. “Pray” and “Dust” are available to stream now and will be available as a limited edition 12” white label on December 4th on Matador.

Both videos were directed by Jesse John Jenkins.

Savages - 'Adore Life' Coming January 2016 ; "The Answer" Video Premiere

"The Answer" - directed by Giorgio Testi at Pulse
“We've observed our audience all around the world and noticed that something is happening. People want to be pushed to do good, or to be good, or just to feel good. We wanted a very intense video, that felt like banging your head against the wall, focusing on our audience: a portrait of our crowd, an homage to music lovers and the good people who are coming to gigs and shouting their lungs out, or just smiling at the back. We were touched by them every night, and wanted to get their message out there: loud guitar music is still alive and still connects people.” -Savages
