The MataBlog is edited by Matador Records’ co-moaner Gerard Cosloy and individual entries are the work of whoever’s name is next to them. If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

Algiers - 2023 North American Dates

(photo :  Ebru Yildiz)

On February 24, Matador Records will release SHOOK, the fourth album by Algiers. This spring, the band will embark on a North American tour, which will kick off in Austin, TX at SXSW and conclude in Toronto.

Last night, Algiers performed a special one-off gig at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust. Over two sets, the band debuted material from SHOOK alongside many of the guest-artists who appear on the album, including Amani, Big Rube, billy woods, DeForrest Brown Jr., Desde, Dreamcrusher, Elucid, Fatboi Sharif, King Vision Ultra, Latoya Kent, Maassai, Mark Cisneros, Nakama, and Patrick Shiroishi.

Stacked with guests spanning icons through to future stars, SHOOK is a lightning rod for an elusive yet universal energy and feeling. A plurality of voices; a spiritual and geographical homecoming; a strategy of communion in a burning world; the story of an end of a relationship; an Atlanta front porch summer party. Ultimately, it's a 17-track set of the most mind-expanding and thrilling music that you are likely to hear anytime soon.

Our Annual Orgy of Self-Congratulation, Grandstanding & Overconsumption : Matador Artists & Staff Select Their 2022 Favorites

(congrats to 2022 Matador Inventor Of The Year, Dr. Homei Miyashita of Meiji University's Frontier Media Science.  Dr. Miyashita's dogged attempts to create lickable TV screens have yet to revolutionize either watching TV or licking, but both have been more successful than our introduction of Accutron 3000 and Brobot 3000, so there's that).

(Around this time every December, your STRESSED-TO-THE-MAX  editor attempts to coax a list of favorite recordings, books, television programs, life events, etc. out of the label’s artist roster and our music industry cronies. In the past, this exercise has been a difficult process, fraught with nagging, CRYING  and no shortage of defiantly opposed participants, some of whom actually changed labels or places of employment to weasel out of it.

Keep in mind, we're about to close the books on the ANOTHER YEAR OF THE WORLD GOING TO SHIT and perhaps persons with some sense of perspective or sanity  have other things on their mind than trumpeting their own cultural cachet. Thankfully, we only know a few people like that.

For some historical perspective, here’s last year’s selections. Questions or comments about our terrible tastes and/or inexcuasable  omissions are welcome (but not so welcome that we’re inclined to acknowledge receipt).

On behalf of everyone at Matador, here's wishing you, your families and friends a safe & happy holiday and thank you, as always, thanks for putting up with us. 2023 is going to be our craziest year ever (EDITOR'S NOTE : please check this out with the legal department prior to publication, thx) And without further ado, let the coronoation of Van Morrison's 'What's It Gonna Take?'  commence. – Gerard Cosloy)

Hugo Burnham, Gang Of Four

Hugo's Rule-Defying Baker’s Dozen of 2022:
  1. Touring with the best version of Gang Of Four, ever.
  2. Touring with a small but fabulous crew…all three of them (Frank, Patrick, and Devyn.)
  3. Touring with my daughter (Ts) and my dear friend (Dolette) singing back-up together with us; a return from retirement for one, a Master Class for the other.
  4. Playing sober every night.
  5. Matadorians who came to shows who clearly weren’t there because they had to be.
  6. Discovering new writers - M. W. Craven, JD Kirk, Edward Wilson
  7. Still loving Michael Connolly, John Connolly, Mick Herron, Jack Gatland.
  8. Slow Horses on TV
  9. Meeting Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer. England (actors still) Swing Like A Pendulum…(they) Do.
10. Meeting Paul Thompson.
11. Really listening to (and loving) Bill Berry’s drumming.
12. Playing sloppy, under-rehearsed G4 songs vigorously and wonderfully with the original Mekons. And Jon. In Leeds.

13. Jon getting a Grammy Nomination for ’77-‘81. I told him he had to wear the medal on stage next year...

Honorable Mention: Jake

Steve Burhans, Beggars Group

Ten most listened to releases of 2022 (mostly re-issues, cause that’s my business but also my pleasure)

No particular order:

- V/A – Fell From The Sun (Downtempo And After Hours 1990-91) 2xLP (Ace) Never expected this to be my go to listen this year, but life is a mystery. Compiled by the boys from Saint Etienne and it sounds like it! Cooked a lot of dinners in 2022 to this one.

- The Retail Simps  - Reverberant Scratch: 9 Shots In Tha Dark LP (Total Punk) Someone sold me on this LP by saying it was like Ron House fronting the Bar Kays. That’s accurate and a guarantee of quality (maybe not the quality you expect).

- Thee Isolators – Crying Eyes b/w Close That Door 7” (Iso-Tope)
Killer debut single from a truly deranged crew. Rust belt hoodlums attached to the same live wire that John Terlesky held in his wildest days. There’s some real garage archeology happening here and hopefully it’s just the beginning.

- V/A – East Side 415 2xCS (12 Man Rambo/L-Wood Media)
An amazing and thorough survey of East Bay (Oakland, Richmond, Vallejo) rap that pre-dates the area code switch from 415 to 510 in 1991. A reverbed out booming album (like Master P used to say). Raw and essential.

- Biff Bang Pow – A Better Life: The Complete Creations 4xCD (Cherry Red)
It’s always rare to find another Biff Bang Pow enthusiast. The ones I’ve met are all still close friends. I’m not looking for any new friends… but determined applicants can start here. Everything (and more) released from a band that never seems to get the praise they deserve. Never realized how much this band needed a box set.

- V/A – A Chant About The Beauty Of The Moon At Night: Early Hawaiian Steel Guitar Masters LP (Magnificent Sounds)
Rare and beautiful Hawaiian 78’s collected with love. The influence of this stuff on American 20th century music is laid bare in this rewarding collection. This LP really takes you on a journey to a different (head) space.

- Dredd Foole And The Din – Songs in Heat 1982 CD (Corbett vs. Dempsey)
First in a series of releases covering the worlds of Dan Ireton. This covers the Mission Of Burma encompassing Mark 1 Din and includes the complete session for the world beating debut 7”. Future installments are anxiously anticipated.

- Jacks – Vacant World LP (Mesh-Key)
One of my favorite LP’s ever, in what must be the ultimate version. Loud and crystal clear. The cover has never looked better. Obviously this record should be in every home.

- Richard Thompson – Music From Grizzly Man 2xLP (No Quarter)
Criminally rare on LP, I was happy to revisit this again. Probably the last great Richard Thompson LP and the most striking overall. Moody, atmospheric and intimate.

- Project Pat – Murderers & Robbers LP (Project)
Comp of raw street material from Pat’s Pre-Loud Records, Pre-prison sentence early 90’s mixtapes. Basically unavailable outside of Memphis and the dark corners of the internet, it’s a blessing that we finally got this one on LP for the heads.

BONUS BEATS:

The Cat’s Miaow – Songs ’94-’98 LP (World Of Echo)/Hydroplane – Hydroplane LP (Efficient Space) Both sides of this celebrated and yet overlooked group of Australian musicians. Two different styles from two different bands with all the same people. Worth finding these if you can. The hype sticker on the Hydroplane could never live up to the comparisons listed (Radiophonic Workshop, Endtroducing, etc) but was enough to make this cynic pull the trigger.

TOP 5 RECORD SCORES OF 2022
Pere Ubu - Final Solution b/w Cloud 149 (1976, Hearthan Records - USA)
The elusive picture sleeve of this Cleveland punk staple featuring liner notes but guitarist Peter Laughner
Cramp - She Doesn't Love Me b/w Suzy Lie Down (1979, Rip Off Records - N. Ireland)
Double A side Irish punk classic, very hard to find pic sleeve as usual with Rip Off stuff.
Filth - Don't Hide Your Hate b/w Sex & Nothing For Me (1978, Plurex Records - Netherlands)
Top European punk single and the mastering on KBD4 does this one no justice. Loud & raw
Bags - Survive b/w Babylonian Gordon (1978, Dangerhouse - USA)
The final record needed in my Dangerhouse collection, this one has grown significantly  in price, so I was glad to get the right price on this misprint label copy nonetheless.
Dogs - Slash Your Face b/w Fed Up & Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl? (1978, Detroit Records - USA)
One of the most iconic KBD tracks, had to travel to Den Bosch to get this one but well worth the trip

Earlier this year, Mdou Moctar’s Souleymane Ibrahim and black midi’s Morgan Simpson  connected for the first time in Chicago at Electrical Audio on the heels of a recent North American tour. After some set-up and impromptu free-styling, Simpson and Ibrahim drummed to songs together from their respective latest albums: “Sugar/Tzu” from black midi’s Hellfire and “Chismiten” from Mdou Moctar’s Afrique Victime. The drummers found immediate musical affinity spending the afternoon sharing rhythms and playing off one another’s personal cadence and pulse. Today marks the premiere of a mini-documentary showcasing this special drum session on the Rough Trade YouTube Channel.

It's been almost five years since I've played my hometown, so we're playing five nights of shows, leading up to Valentine's Day, with a surprise band (or two) every night, curated by me. We tried to do this last year, but had to cancel for surgery! Feels worth the wait :) I'll see you at the Ottobar :)”

Out Today : Spoon & Adrian Sherwood - 'Lucifer On The Moon'

Spoon - photo by Olivia Wolfe

Adrian Sherwood - photo by Harry Borden

Spoon & Adrian Sherwood's 'Lucifer On The Moon' is available today in record shops and via all streaming services.

'Lucifer on the Moon' is the anti-gravity companion to Spoon’s 'Lucifer on the Sofa'. A top-to-bottom rework of the Austin band's tenth album, it was created by On-U Sound founder and UK dub icon, Adrian Sherwood..

'Moon' first took shape as a few heady remixes for the singles from 'Lucifer on the Sofa'. Frontman Britt Daniel offered Sherwood two suggestions: “Avoid things that would not be possible on tape” and “Add whatever you want to add, the less modern the better.” The collaboration shouldn't come as a surprise: dub-inspired production is wound through Spoon’s classic tracks, from "Finer Feelings" to "Inside Out."  The initial results pleased both parties and Sherwood was invited to work on additional songs. And then a few more. “I got into the melody and the thoughts it evoked in me,” the producer explains. “It just evolved and we eventually found ourselves with a whole album.”

'Moon' flips 'Lucifer on the Sofa'’s rhythm tracks inside-out, and often rebuilds them wholesale. Sherwood supplied extensive additional instrumentation via On-U’s extended family of session players, including bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc (both of whom performed in Sugarhill Records’ early ’80s in-house rhythm section). He dug deep into the album’s multi-tracks, surfacing forgotten details and elements not present in the final album mixes.

The result airlifts Spoon’s trademark melodies into lush alien terrain, replete with vibrant echo and rumbling low-end. “It wasn’t just a thing where you pick apart this and that and you stay on the grid and you add a delay,” explains Daniel. “He added so much more instrumentation to the tracks that they became completely different versions of the songs. Not just remixes, but companion pieces. A ‘Part II.’”

Matador 2022 Year-End Sale : 25% Off (Almost) Everything

We realize there's likely to be some sore feelings about Matador's decision to fully automate our mail order operations, but when we factored in the amount of time label ownership spent dealing with email complaints about bent corners, warped records or USPS going AWOL, it was time to make some bold moves.  And what move could be bolder than opting for the suave services of ACCUTRON 3000 and his not-nearly-as-polished sibling BROBOT 3000?  This dynamic duo are absolutely KILLING IT on the warehouse floor (and by "killing it", I mean Brobot 3000 might've actually killed someone --- we're still investigating) and we're very confident that as this holiday season approaches, your orders will be fulfilled quickly and competently and there's almost no chance whatsoever Brobot 3000 will threaten me with a box cutter ever again.   Think of Accutron 3000 as Gallant to Brobot 3000's Goofus.  Or the Noam to his Liam.  Or maybe the other way around.  I can't tell, this has been very stressful with all the threats.

To celebrate these 2 new additions to our team, we're offering 25% off nearly everything at the Matador Store (preorders and Queens Of The Stone Age reissues excepted) when you use the code "AUTOMATON" at check out.
The sale ends November 22 (or whenever the SWAT team is called to deal with Brobot 3000, whichever comes first).

Interpol have shared a new video for ‘Passenger’, one of the highlights from this year's The Other Side of Make-Believe. The video came to be unexpectedly – longstanding Interpol fan Jamie McDonald had been experimenting with animation and produced the video on their own, feeling a special connection with the song. After uploading it to one of Interpol’s social pages, the video came to the attention of the band who loved it and asked if they could use it as an official video.

Director Jamie McDonald says: "Passenger spoke to me. As soon as I listened to it, I was inspired. The idea behind the music video visually, is that of a fever dream. We're exploring the subconscious, delving into dreams, and delving even deeper into nightmares. This is really a passion project for me."

Coming February 10 2023 : Yo La Tengo - 'This Stupid World'

presave/purchase 'This Stupid World'
stream / download 'Fallout'

Today we bring you the indisputably excellent news that on February 10 Matador will release 'This Stupid World', the sixteenth album by Yo La Tengo.

In December, the band will return to Bowery Ballroom for their annual eight-night Hanukkah concert series. Early 2023, Yo La Tengo will hit the road on a wide-ranging tour of the US, UK, and Europe.

Time keeps moving and things keep changing, but that doesn’t mean we can't fight back. Yo La Tengo have raced time for nearly four decades and, to my ears, they just keep winning. The trio’s latest victory is called 'This Stupid World', a spellbinding set of reflective songs that resist the ticking clock. This music is not so much timeless as time- defiant. “I want to fall out of time,” Ira Kaplan sings in “Fallout.” “Reach back, unwind.”

Part of how Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew escape time is by watching it pass, even accepting it when they must. “I see clearly how it ends / I see the moon rise as the sun descends,” they sing during opener “Sinatra Drive Breakdown.” In the séance-like "Until it Happens,” Kaplan plainly intones, “Prepare to die / Prepare yourself while there’s still time.” But 'This Stupid World' is also filled with calls to reject time – bide
it, ignore it, waste it. "Stay alive," he adds later in the same song. "Look away from the hands of time.”

Of course, times have changed for Yo La Tengo as much as they have for everyone else. In the past, the band has often worked with outside producers and mixers. They made 'This Stupid World' all by themselves. And their time-tested judgment is both sturdy enough to keep things to the band’s high standards, and nimble enough to make things new.

Another new thing about 'This Stupid World' : it’s the most live-sounding Yo La Tengo album in years. At the base of nearly every track is the trio playing all at once, giving everything a right-now feel. Take the signature combination of hypnotic rhythm and spontaneous guitar on “Sinatra Drive Breakdown,” or the steady chug of “Tonight’s Episode,” a blinkered tunnel of forward-moving sound. There’s an immediacy to the music, as if the distance between the first pass and the final product has become more
direct.

The songs on 'This Stupid World 'are still journeys, though. An example is the absorbing, three-dimensional “Brain Capers.” To construct this swirl, the band blends guitar chords, bass loops, drum punches, and various iterations of Hubley and Kaplan's voices intoshifting layers. Simpler but just as dense is closer “Miles Away"; A dubby rhythm lurks
below Hubley’s vocal, which brushes across the song like paint leaving bright blurs.

Throughout the album, these touches, accents, and surprises intensify each piece. It’s ararity – a raw-sounding record that gives you plenty of headphone-worthy detail to chew  on.

'This Stupid World' also gives your brain a lot to digest. All these battles with time drive toward heavy conclusions. In the gripping “Aselestine,” Hubley sings about what sounds like a friend on death's door : “The clock won’t tick / I can’t predict / I can’t sell your books, though you asked me to.” In “Apology Letter,” time turns simple communication into something fraught and confusing: "The words / Derail on the way from me to you.”

Not everything is so serious, though. The absurdist “Tonight’s Episode"  helps McNew learn to milk cows, steal faces, and treat guacamole as a verb. And somehow Alice Cooper, Ray Davies, and Rick Moranis show up in “Brain Capers” — all telling us that time isn’t finished yet.

So I guess everyone on This Stupid World grapples with how time keeps steamrolling and how we keep trying to do something about it. It is there in the title, a defiant but clear-eyed declaration that suggests a will to fight, against the odds. It’s there in the title track too: “This stupid world – it’s killing me / This stupid world – is all we have.” Such realism leads to the resolute optimism of 'This Stupid World's parting shot, “Miles Away,”
which sees time’s passage and life'ss impermanence as things to deal with rather than reasons to despair. “You feel alone / Friends are all gone", Hubley sings softly. "Keep wiping the dust from your eyes.” -
Marc Masters

Out Friday, Lucifer on the Moon is the anti-gravity companion to Spoon’s Lucifer on the Sofa. It’s a full-on reimagination of the Austin band's tenth album created by On-U Sound founder and UK dub icon, Adrian Sherwood.

Today, listen to “The Devil and Mr. Jones” (Rework), which twists the original song down to a head-spinning, half-time groove.

Moon flips Lucifer on the Sofa’s rhythm tracks inside-out, and often rebuilds them wholesale. Sherwood supplied extensive additional instrumentation via On-U’s extended family of session players, including bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc (both of whom performed in Sugarhill Records’ early ’80s in-house rhythm section). Yo La Tengo's entire Matador Records catalog is now available on Bandcamp starting today. We do realize this announcement will likely provoke replies asking when some other band's entire catalog will be available on Bandcamp and the answer to that question is most assuredly, "someday" or "maybe". Thank you.

Circuit des Yeux - "Live At Greenwood Cemetary"

“Here on hallowed ground soil becomes clogged with tears, sorrow, and embitterment. It’s not fair the way a blade of grass can carry on while us humans wrestle with the mirage of justice.”

On June 7, Haley Fohr, AKA Circuit des Yeux (@circuitdesyeux), joined us at Greenwood Cemetery for an otherworldly installment of Graveyard Shift, alongside Whitney Johnson (@matchesse) on viola. Today on PW Broadcast, we present a video of the performance accompanied by "Learning To Dance Through Loss," a series of poems by Fohr reflecting on that night.

Horsegirl have made their cover of the Minutemen’s “History Lesson Part 2.” --- previously released as the b-side to the "Billy" 7"  --- available digitally for the first time today. “‘History Lesson Part 2’ has always been a punk manifesto for us,” says Horsegirl. “It was an unusual pick to cover considering the lyrics are so specific to the Minutemen, but we thought there was something appealing too about recording a"History Lesson"; that doesn’t actually give you any history on us."
