If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

VIDEO: Julien Baker - Tiny Desk Concert + New U.S. Tour Dates

Julien Baker first performed at NPR's Tiny Desk Concert in early 2016, several months after the release of her debut album Sprained Ankle. Today she becomes one of the few artists to perform at Tiny Desk for a second time. Joined by her touring violinist Camille Faulkner, Baker performed three tracks from her sophomore LP Turn Out The Lights, "Appointments," "Hurt Less," and "Even." This session comes on the heels of Julien's late night debut, performing "Turn Out The Lights" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Baker has also announced her first U.S. tour dates of 2018 today, through the Midwest and Northeast this spring after traveling to Europe in March with Belle & Sebastian. Tickets for the new dates are on sale this Friday, January 12th at 10am EST.

Coming February 16 : Car Seat Headrest - 'Twin Fantasy' ; "Nervous Young Inhumans" Video Premiere

(photo credit : Dos Rios Films)

Car Seat Headrest fans, new and old alike, will be elated to learn that Will Toledo’s 2011’s Bandcamp masterpiece, 'Twin Fantasy', has been re-recorded and re-imagined for release on February 16th (*pre-order breakdown below). With a seven-piece band in tow (including members of Naked Giants), Car Seat Headrest will bring its explosive and live show to Australia, Europe, and select West Coast cities through the first half of 2018, with a full US tour to be announced at a later date.

Today’s album announcement comes with the release of “Nervous Young Inhumans” and its accompanying video, which can be seen above. It is a frenetic, anthemic, split-screen choreographed crescendo, and the result of Toledo’s visionary work as a first-time director.

Toledo always knew he would return to 'Twin Fantasy'. He never did complete the work. Not really. Never could square his grand ambitions against his mechanical limitations. Listen to his first attempt, recorded at nineteen on a cheap laptop, and you’ll hear what Brian Eno fondly calls “the sound of failure” - thrilling, extraordinary, and singularly compelling failure. Will’s first love, rendered in the vivid teenage viscera of stolen gin, bruised shins, and weird sex, was an event too momentous for the medium assigned to record it.

Even so, even awkward and amateurish, 'Twin Fantasy' is deeply, truly adored. Legions of reverent listeners carve rituals out of it: sobbing over “Famous Prophets,” making out to “Cute Thing,” dancing their asses off as “Bodys” climbs higher, higher. The distortion hardly matters. You can hear him just fine. You can hear everything. And you can feel everything: his hope, his despair, his wild overjoy. He’s trusting you - plural you, thousands of you - with the things he can’t say out loud. “I pretended I was drunk when I came out to my friends,” he sings - and then, caught between truths, backtracks: “I never came out to my friends. We were all on Skype, and I laughed and changed the subject.”

You might be imagining an extended diary entry, an angsty transmission from a bygone LiveJournal set to power chords and cranked to eleven. You would be wrong. 'Twin Fantasy'is not a monologue. 'Twin Fantasy' is a conversation. "You know," he sings, "that I’m mostly singing about you." This is Will’s greatest strength as a songwriter ; he spins his own story, but he’s always telling yours, too. Between nods to local details - Harper’s Ferry, The Yellow Wallpaper, the Monopoly board collecting dust in his back seat - he leaves room for the fragile stuff of your own life, your own loves. From the very beginning, alone in his bedroom, in his last weeks of high school, he knew he was writing anthems. Someday, he hoped, you and I might sing these words back to him.

“It was never a finished work,” Toledo says, “and it wasn’t until last year that I figured out how to finish it.”
He has, now, the benefit of a bigger budget, a full band in fine form, and endless time to tinker. According to him, it took eight months of mixing just to get the drums right. But this is no shallow second take, sanitized in studio and scrubbed of feeling. This is the album he always wanted to make. It sounds the way he always wanted it to sound.

It’s been hard, stepping into the shoes of his teenage self, walking back to painful places. There are lyrics he wouldn’t write again, an especially sad song he regards as an albatross. But even as he carries the weight of that younger, wounded Toledo, he moves forward. He grows. He revises, gently, the songs we love so much. In the album’s final moments, in those “apologies to future me’s and you’s,” there is more forgiveness than fury.

This, Toledo says, is the most vital difference between the old and the new: he no longer sees his own story as a tragedy.

Belle and Sebastian - "The Same Star", from 'How To Solve Our Human Problems' EP2

Belle and Sebastian kick off 2018 with shimmering new single “The Same Star.” Taken from Part 2 of the band’s new trilogy of EPs, 'How To Solve Our Human Problems, the Sarah Martin penned, Leo Abrahams produced song brings together breezy guitars, feel-good rhythm and Martin’s bittersweet vocals for another showcase of the infectious, inquisitive and timeless pop on the band’s latest work.

The band concluded 2017 in festive fashion, with UK radio sessions for Lauren Laverne on 6 Music (listen HERE), Jo Whiley on Radio 2 (listen from 1:11:50 here), and BBC Radio Scotland’s The Quay Sessions, where they performed a special cover of The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping.”

Belle and Sebastian will embark on UK and European tour dates through February and March and all upcoming dates can be found below.

Recalling their 1997 release of three consecutive EPs, 'How To Solve Our Human Problems', has the classic blend of joy and melancholy and idiosyncratic spirit that has always characterised Belle and Sebastian. A double album’s worth of music – richly melodic, deliciously literate, as gentle as a summer stream but as insistent as a river – How To Solve Our Human Problems is both an era of its own, and part of a long, rich history.

The 3x12" 'How To Solve Our Human Problem' boxset is available with two different purchase options ; you can buy the set as a subscription which will ship an EP to your door each month, starting with the first EP today, the second EP on January 19th and the third EP and box + poster on Febraury 16th.)
OR you can buy the 3x12" boxset as a complete set, which will ship to arrive on February 16th, 2018.
Alternatively, you may purchase a CD compilation of the 3 EPs, which will also ship to arrive on February 16th, 2018.

The 3 EPs are also available individually, without the boxset and poster, on each of the dates listed above. You can buy EP 1 HERE, EP 2 HERE and EP 3 HERE.

Our Annual Orgy of Self-Congratulation, Grandstanding & Overconsumption : Matador Artists & Staff Select Their 2017 Favorites

(noted record collector M. Shkreli walks out of Matador's 2017 "Best Of' presentation party at the Princeton Corporate Finance Club after being informed his reference acetate to the unreleased 'Hippy Porn' soundtrack has been seized by the SEC)

Around this time every year, your about to "go postal" (except we're not supposed to use that expression given how hard our letter carrier friends work )conscientious editor attempts to coax a list of favorite recordings, books, television programs, life events, etc. out of the label’s artist roster and our show business friends. In the past, the exercise has been an trying process, fraught with nagging, teeth-gnashing and no shortage of hesitant participants, some of whom actually changed labels or places of employment or their identities to avoid the task. Even worse, we continue to overlook persons currently recording for or working for the record label (either that or they've saving their lists for Brooklyn Vegan).

For some historical perspective, here’s last year’s selections. Questions or comments about our crap taste and/or inexplicable omissions are welcome (but it's totally ok if you keep it to yourself) . And without further ado, let the coronation of Kendrick Lamar commence - GC)

TOP 5 BOB DYLAN MOMENTS IN THE MATADOR WAREHOUSE  2017 EDITION

"Like Dylan In The Warehouse
.....if they follow you, Don't Back Down."
1) Bob Dylan - Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight
After a coming off a 15 year hangover and finding Christ Dylan returns to more secular songwriting and has Mark Knopfler return to play on and produce his upcoming record, the band is rounded out by former (greatest) Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and famed reggae musicians and producers Sly & Robbie.  Infidels closes with this track, one of Bobby's greatest love songs in this non album alternate take.

2) Bob Dylan on the set of Hearts Of Fire

In 1986 Dylan made another pass at acting as if being in Sam Peckinpah's greatest film wasn't already enough this time around he was being directed by the man a few years off of Return of the Jedi and what would be considered by some as the film that did him in as he died of a stroke later the same year. Gone are the days of Bob and co. fleeing to a nearby car to evade screaming fans you may be familiar with from Don't Look Back or Eat the Document here we see Bob yucking it up with some metal head children ("Oh yeah? you like Ozzy? How about RATT?), unwillingly taking a photo with a fan who thinks he shares a similar nose line as he, willingly taking some photos with 2 female fans then says hello to an old Canadian wrestler and father of Jake "The Snake" Roberts; Grizzly Smith. All this and more can be seen in the documentary about the making of the film called GETTING TO DYLAN

 3) Bob Dylan, Harry Dean Stanton and Peter Himmelman perform Hava Nagila at 25th Chabad Telethon
On September 15th we heard of the tragic passing of Harry Dean Stanton, a man everyone in the Matador Warehouse has greatly admired for years. After resisting the urge to watch Cockfighter and/or UFOria I settled on listening to he, Bob and Bob's son-in-law take to the Chabad Telethon in Los Angeles. Bob only plays harp on this but Harry Dean and Rabbi Shlomo interaction is the real treat here. RIP HDS!

4) Bob Dylan & The Rolling Thunder Revue - Madison Square Garden 12.08.75 "The Night Of The Hurricane"
In 2017 thanks to a YouTube user who I will not name here but whose amazing account can be accessed through the link we were able to conquer the entire 1975/1976 tour with The Rolling Thunder Revue, no need to go into detail about the electric energy from these shows but this one in particular kept us coming back for more. The band is on fire and blazes through the first set with Mick Ronson guitar finally high in the mix. Maybe the best Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You and a beautiful Never Let Me Go > St. Augustine > I Shall Be Released end ithe first set. Bobby comes back out for a legendary 2nd set that includes a very emotional Hurricane which the concert was a benefit for Rubin Carter's legal costs. Video footage of the entire concert exists and was screened this year in secret at the future site of the Bob Dylan Archives Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

5) Bob Dylan - I Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody - Massey Hall 04.20.80
Bootleg Series #13 was released in November of 2017 and we at the Warehouse were gearing up all year long and off the unreleased tracks we were familiar with from various bootlegs this was a favorite. "The band was fiiiine" says a Portland, OR Radio Spot promoting a 1980 concert and that man couldn't be more correct. In arguably Bobby's greatest touring band since The Band, Bob released 3 great albums and toured behind them relentlessly in what I consider to be his most confrontational period since the 1966 tour.
