maximum of 10 choices, so no room for "other" or any Fading Captain Series stuff or Suitcase or any of the EPs ....

Suitcase is really your favorite or are you just being difficult?

I will always be partial to UTBUTS because it was the first I bought and as far as I'm concerned still the most consistent GBV album. 21 songs and not a stinker in the bunch.

Zero votes for Do The Collapse so far!! It's by no means bad.

I don't think DTC is too many people's favorite but it's a fun album. There' some great stuff: Things that I will Keep, Surgical focus, Liquid Indian, Picture Me Big Time, Teenage FBI and An Unmarketed Product. And it has a different sound from any other GBV. I call it their 70's commercial pop album.

bitterfruit
07-14-2003, 05:55 PM
Agreed fully. "Hold On Hope" is the only bad spot on the album. DTC is not nearly as kitschy as UTAC.

newspearmint
07-14-2003, 06:59 PM
i like Hold on Hope, even if pollard says he doesn't.
It's the middle part of DTC that i don't care for..like wormhole and much better mr buckels. Liquid indian is a bit glossy. And also the cover and the colors and the photos are kind of weak.
But when it came out it was all i could listen to.

bitterfruit

I always like the Straight Outta Compton-esque orange jumpsuit that Pollard was wearing.

If we're inclined to compare albums to other band albums (like everyone says ID is GBV's Who's Next), then I think DTC is their Let It Be. Why? Cos it's not nearly as bad as people think, in fact a lot better, but suffers from over-production. They both also have the one big soppy ballad (or two) that I like. I really like Wrecking Now actually, the one song where Rick Osacek's production actually works for the better of the song.

I find DTC to be their weakest album even though I like "Hold on Hope". There's a presence of a few quite bad GBV songs like "Zoo Pie" ack.

evil_speakers
07-15-2003, 11:59 AM
I really like Zoo Pie. I know a lot of people hate it, but I really dig the drumming. I listened the hell out of DTC when it came out, though I rarely go back to it.

On a side note, the new album did nothing for me on my first 3 spins (which is rare, usually the third spins is the winner for me), but I just realized I have one of the songs in my head right now... it begins....

I love Do the Collapse. I'm very into the sort of industrial dark era of Waved Out and Mag. I love the early stuff like get out of my stations ep and whatnot. I really didn't care for the last two albums especially the very last one. I think the solo albums are my favorite.

My defense of DTC in Pitchfork mail bag (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/mail/archive/oct00/3.shtml)

I also like "Hold on Hope" and I think it came off well live. I have a few recordings of it. One is a BBC broadcast of GbV opening for Gomez in 1999. It's a short set and the crowd is clearly not into it for the first few songs until a fine "Hold on Hope" audibly wins some of them over.

And fans of the "Bob-and-one-guitar" songs on Suitcase might like the lo-fi demo version of "Hold on Hope" on the Fading Captain vinyl edition of the Hold on Hope EP (Daredevil Stamp Collector).

And I support Do the Collapse. I particularly like "Strumpet Eye" and "Wrecking Now".

this poll is proving at long last that Bee Thousand is overrated (currently #4)
and that Under the Bushes (at least at it's time of release) was criminally underrated.

How 'bout a favorite gbv ep slash cd single poll?

I've always felt that way. Even though B1000 has many highlights, songs like awful bliss, her psycholgy today, esters day and (especially) demons are real are barely even songs. Yes they have that lo-fi thrown together charm, but I like solid songs.

As far as I'm concerned, UTBUTS has 21 solid, stick in your head never forget, songs. There's not one song on that CD that doesn't blow me away. I'll be hummin it on my death bed. A true classic.

bitterfruit
07-16-2003, 03:44 PM
Hmmm. Don't know about that argument. It's a tough call. Do you remember the warm/fuzziness you felt when first hearing Bee Thousand? I do. I remember it with UTBUTS too is the problem.

I don't think it is or was overrated at all. If anything is overrated, it's Universal Truths And Cycles or some of the later FCS releases.

Bee Thousand has always been my favorite. I always liked the lo-fi thrown together stuff. But UTBUTS is also an amazing pop record. Brilliant songs.

I love under the bushes as well. and drag days and big boring wedding are great songs. They do some of that on the video the one filmed in what was it Holllywood or something? There's a version of "wished I was a Giant " on that that's so perfect it's unreal. It looks lip synced

Atom Eyes ------ now that's a brilliant tune. I think I'll have to listen to it right now since I am thinking about it.

cungar
07-17-2003, 11:17 AM
I always felt that two of GBV's best pure pop tunes; Atom Eyes and Drag Days were on the same album, UTBUTS. The question is which is better...Tobin's or Bob's????

Ladt
07-17-2003, 01:44 PM
Drag Days is technically a better song (love the riff, more complex structure), but it doesn't quite do it for me the way Atom Eyes does, there's just sometihng about that song. I get a similar feeling with the Eyesinweasel song Pure flesh, similar types of pop songs, love em both.

I would have loved to hear REM do Drag Days back when they were good.

Did Tobe ever do a song that sounded more like early REM than She Love's her Gown?

All that Figure 4 stuff sounds like REM to me. However I never really got the GBV/REM comparisons beyond the first couple of albums.

The thing about Do the Collapse is that despite the fact that it is hard to listen to the album all the way through, there are particular songs that are flat-out outstanding, period. I absolutely love "Strumpet Eye," "An Unmarketed Product," and (yes) "Zoo Pie." But whenever I listen to this record, I'm usually jsut buzzing through, trying to get the highlights. I think I'll pull that one out soon actually, and give it a total hearing.

I think Same Place the Fly Got Smashed is their best album since it holds together so well conceptually. But, songwise I think UTBUTS has the best tunes. And then of course Bee Thousand is the one that made everyone take notice, so you can't count that one out.

Yeah, it's probably the straightest voer of a GBV song that I have ever heard. I think he's got a good voice but I'd rather listen to any GBV version any day. There's also a version by My Vitriol which is OK.
Talking of GBV covers- anyone heard the delgados version of Indian Fables? That's great, I need to find that again, not gonna shell out for the whole sessions when there are no other songs I want though.

the Breeders' cover of "Shocker in Gloomtown" is fucking brilliant. I think it destroys GBV's version--that's probably illegal to say or something, but whatever.

Just voted for "Under the Bushes..." because it was my first encounter with GBV and it still stands out. I just feel sorry for all the jerks who hasenīt heard it yet ( and there are appearantly a lot of them ).

Strange though that "Universal..." isnīt more popular - I would rate it as GBVīs second strongest album.

Fast Japanese...yes!!! Marchers in Orange makes me want to jump up and down and spin around. The VIMH (video in my head) for that one has them at a carnival or fair or something and they're riding the Scrambler...Easily one of their best outputs regardless of length.

I used to think "volcano divers" from FJSC was just to silly and nonessential, but now that's what I like about it. If you like that ep don't miss "get out of my stations" featuring "melted Pat" acouple really good songs and "blue moon fruit" which is just thaty.

Hi, I'm new here, and pretty new to GBV as well (I've been into them since about December). I voted for Bee Thousand, though I also have Alien Lanes, UTBUTS, and Earthquake Glue, all of which I love, very much in fact. Which one should I get next, is the question! Mag Earwhig or Isolation Drills?? Or Propeller/Titus? Or should I try to find the box set w/ all the early stuff and King Shit?

If you visit the stephenmalkmus.com board, you'll know me as

hey--how are ya! :)

If I might humbly make a suggestion--get Mag Earwhig!. The record is a nice blend of a lot of different styles from GBV, and the album's songs themselves are flat-out stellar (my 2nd-favorite GBV record actually, after Alien Lanes.

But if you're ever in the store and you see a GBV release that you don't have, just grab it regardless! When it comes to GBV music acquisition, in my opinion, any order is the best order :D

I'm a B1000 gal m'self, followed closely by Vampire, with UTBUTS nipping at its heels.

But, I gotta tell ya...being a superlongtime fan, I wonder if Earthquake Glue is going to shoot right up there one day among that clusterfuck of brilliance. It makes me excited about GbV all over again.

The reason I think Earthquake Glue is a classic is because I can see myself throwing it on 2 years from now or 5 years from now and just rocking out in my car. With some of the other CD's you kind of have to get into the mood to listen to them. Like Alien Lanes I can only listen to when I'm working or drunk.
