Flin Flon - Chicotoumi CD
holy crap this is awesome. that's really all I can say
Destroyer - This Night 2LP
I'm a huge dork and bought the 2LP version even though I own the CD as well. It was on sale though! ten bucks! c'mon!
Oneida / Liars - Atheists, Reconsider split 12"
The Aislers Set - Mission Bells 12"
I've been going crazy over How I Learned To Write Backwards so I had to run out and get this single too..
Sean Na Na - Sean Tillman Is a Fucking Star 7"
Sean Tillman is a fucking self-obsessed chooch. I used to like Sean Na Na so much, but his Har Mar persona has leaked into the Sean Na Na and kinda ruined it.

Any thoughts on the M. Ward record? I haven't been able to spend a lot of time with it so far, but from what I have heard, I like it.
Microphones are really sinking in a major way. I think I like them for the same reason that I like Neutral Milk Hotel.

jeff mangum put out one awesome album. phil elvrum has made three albums that i can really stick by and they stick right back. i've been listening to the two just mentioned and mount eerie the past few days.
another album that i put aside and have picked up again is GBV's UTAC. it's a nice throwback not to alien lanes or bee thousand, but to mag earwhig, with a dash of do the collapse/iso drills (those are the weakest numbers). lyrically it's much improved over iso drills, but i liked most of collapse lyrically.
I love the lyrics of UTAC.

Hey is anyone here a fan (or non-fan) of Ben Kweller? I don't really know him that well but for whatever reason, I always assumed I wouldn't be into him. Someone played me a couple songs off of his album though and it was a lot better than I was expecting....
I have EP Phone home which is pretty good, Falling and Harriet's Got A song are great. Haven't heard much else.
Fellas,
I just got the Telophono cd that I have been searching for my entire life. My god.
Oh and I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to the new Cardigans record, I am a sucker for the Swedes. And I am also looking forward to the new Blur although I hear that it is pathetic.
Never cared much from them. The Wannadies however......
Yeah, the Cardigans aren't that great, but I've gotta waste money some how. And that lead singer is hot, but no Neko Case.
Funny that, last time I had that attitude I bought New Pronographers. And Superdrag, but that's not as good.
Being a current resident of Knoxville I have to defend my boys from superdrag. They are all great guys and put on one heck of a live show, and they got Guided By Voices to come to the Knox, where bands usually refuse to play.
Last Call was good, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as 'In the Valley' or ' Head Trip In Everykey'
Also has anyone else noticed that Superdrag and Nada Surf seem to get better with every album while Weezer is heading the opposite way?
Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, but not as good as the new pornographers, wouldn't you agree. It's probably more consistent but the only high point that gets near the four or five on Mass romantics is baby goes to 11. Not really comparable though.

Got the new Portastatic album and it is undeniably the best album of the year that I have heard so far.

I keep on hearing more and more good things about the Portastatic record ... definitely something I'll be getting hold of.
Lately for me:
YLT - Summer Sun
Amon Tobin - Permutation
Console - Rocket in the Pocket
Clinic - Walking with Thee
I had always dismissed Walking with Thee as an inferior rehash of Internal Wrangler, but after many months away it sounds a lot better than I remember it.
Console was a random pick-up in a $3 bin this weekend, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Never heard much about them before. Of course, the one track featured on the front ("14 Zero Zero") is also I think the worst one on the album....

how you like that Miami Sound disc?
there's some pretty fantastic stuff on it, some stuff's just "eh" though.. the fake "Mustang Sally" song is pretty funny.
Paul, the Exploding Hearts album is definately one of my favorites this year. All 10 songs are great. Looking at the cover, and insert you might be reluctant to pick it up(They dress like modern day Pistols, or Ramones) but the songs are brilliant. Remind me of the Clash(Mick Jones' songs), & 70's Power Pop. I don't know, just get the album.
Mr HCI, I was listening to that Electric Eels album yesterday. Great band.
Mr.HCI
05-06-2003, 09:40 PM
The Electric Eels were pretty damn great! I've been a fan since I picked up the Cyclotron/Agitated 45 from a collector catalogue about 15 years ago just 'cause I'd heard they were supposed to be great. I've gotten every compilation of material that's been (legally) released since then and all are fairly indispensable, even though there's plenty of overlap. My favorite title of the four I've owned is God Says Fuck You (released on Homestead in 1991 or '92).

"Cadillac Annie"! It's so shameless in its appropriation you can't help but love it! But yeah, I agree, it's only an okay compilation. "I Get Lifted" and "Funky Me" are mindbogglingly great, though.
Blur- Think Tank
This album is really good, totally different without Coxon though, but definately worth buying. I believe that this is one of the top three albums of the year and could give Broken Social Scene a run for its money as the best album I've heard in a while.
White Stripes- Elephant
Good, but not all of that great. It seems as if I can only tollerate three White Stripes songs at one sitting. Ball and Biscuit is great though.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Fever To Tell
I think that this is much better than the two ep's they have released and this band has real promise. I do get sick of hearing all of her moans and stuff though, but otherwise this is good.
The New Pornographers- Electric Version
Much better album than "Mass Romantic" as a whole. Much, much easier to grab ahold of.
Cardigans- Long Gone Before Daylight
This is just total radio friendly pop. It does have guest appearances by Howlin Pelle Almqvist (Hives) and the guy from Soundtrack of Our Lives. Has one of the better songs that I've heard this year on it, "Live and Learn". This is totally different from that 'Loverfool' stuff.
Spoon- Telephono
This is just classic.

some stuff I've already mentioned, but now with commentary!
New Pornographers - Electric Version CD
Man, Dan Bejar is the king! I know he only has three songs, but on the first couple of listens, his songs really stand out of the Carl Newman gang of songs. The other stuff's great, its just going to take some more time.
The Ponys - Shi Shi Mu Mu 2LP
the Ponys are a wonderful band from Portland, ME, and their debut just got released on the inimitable Time-Lag Records (http://www.time-lagrecords.com) on some heavy-ass vinyl and with a beautiful gatefold cover. A wonderful record in every way.
Comets on Fire - Field Recordings From The Sun CD
holy balls! I wish I had picked this up sooner! this is what I always hoped Acid Mothers Temple would sound like but never did/do. some intense shit.
Death Cab For Cutie - We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes CD
got it when it came out, listened to it, yawned and said "eh, indie rock at its most boring." Now after a few years, I can't stop listening to it. Some great songwriting here.
Erlend Oye - Unrest CD
I listened to it a ton when I bought it, and then forgot about it a week later and misfiled it for weeks on end. Now I've found it again and also found a brand new love for it in my heart.

I really dig it. I only have the last one (Pause) to compare it to, and it's pretty much more of the same. It's very warm and floaty, with the usual great mix of electronics and acoustic instruments. I'm really digging the drums on it -some of the rhythms are fab. What's got me even more excited is that just today I found out that both Four Tet and Manitoba are opening for Prefuse 73 in a couple of weeks...sounds like a fantastic show!

The P73 and Decemberists albums are really outstanding ... every Decemberists review I've read has the Neutral Milk Hotel comparison (almost like Interpol/Joy Division). nice tunes, earl grey. My wife and I saw the decemberists the other night. They are very good musicians and put on a nice show. Unfortunately there were only about 50 people there, and I think the band was quite surprised. I hope that didn't sour them on the idea of coming back to Cleveland.
Futureman, I don't see how anyband on the level of the Decemberists could be anything but pleased with 50 people in Cleveland. They are hardly a household name and they haven't done that much work in the way of touring yet. It is also not exactly prime touring time for the lesser known bands as most colleges have already wrapped things up (or are in the process of doing so) for the semester. Not coming back would be one of worst mistakes that they could make. Where did they play?

Hey jt.r - how does the Dead Meadow album compare to their live show? Their Irving Plaza set blew me away ... I wonder how much they were jamming/expanding on the album with all the solos, effects, etc.... Really looking forward to hearing it though.
Futureman - yeah I wanted to catch the Decemberists when they played NYC but had to miss out. I think they just reissued the album on KRS though so hopefully another tour is in the works....

Dave,
Perhaps you're right. But they (and Jeff Hanson who is touring with them) seemed surprised by the turnout. In any case, they were *really* good. They played at the Beachland Tavern. The ballroom next door was hosting Dick Dale.
I did exchange emails with Collin Meloy, who said they would *definitely* be back to Cleveland. I'm thrilled.
By the bye, they have another album coming out this Fall, so expect them to keep touring.

I fuckin love that band. They definitely don't get enough props, at least not where I go to catch up on props being dealt out.
anywho, they just got a new drummer so that the old drummer could pull a phil collins and step out from behind the kit and become a proper frontman.
I've yet to see that incarnation live, but I really loved them when they had him singing and drumming up front...

Four Tet - Rounds
Wilco - Being There
The Sea and Cake - s/t
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
Velvet Underground - 1969 (live)
I've always loved the first two VU albums but have been less into the post-Cale stuff (though I haven't listened to it a ton). But I got the live 2D set a couple weeks ago though and it is revelatory ... hearing them in a totally new light and really just blown away. New takes on old songs, tight, expansive jams ... fantastic stuff.
I know not everyone here is into Radiohead, but I like the new album. The production is excellent and I think pulls up songs that otherwise aren't up to par. Very strong highlights, but overall it's not as consistent and dynamic as their past albums. Much more of a holding pattern compared to the leaps forward of the past few. Still early though, their albums have all grown on me....

not quite as random and original as the debut (nor is the cover art), but still good. the lyrics are almost immediately decipherable; some of it's like gbv meets xiu xiu...and it's not so bad. basically it's more straight ahead conventional. i'm hoping they tour sometime this year on the east coast.

Except "Doc at the Radar Station," which I don't like so much. how's "Strictly Personal" compare to any of those?Strictly Personal is the stepping off spot from the "relative ordinariness" of Safe as Milk to the blasting insanity of Trout Mask Replica. One foot is in convention but the other foot has been hacked clean off. It was the first Beefheart LP I purchased as a youngun around 20 years ago and I just picked up the CD version on Liberty UK and it actually sounds better than my vinyl copy (the mud that obscured the vinyl has been washed away to better reveal some nice, sharp edges). BTW, some of the stuff from Mirror Man sort of overlaps Strictly Personal. If you like Safely Licking Off Milky Decals, I think you'll dig it.
I find it interesting that you don't care for Doc at the Radar Station, though. That one is perennially tied with Trout Mask Replica for my favorite CB album. I like to think of it as Beefheart's punk album. I saw him do "Hot Head" and "Ashtray Heart" from that one on Saturday Night Live when I was 17 and it blew my mind. For some reason, though, it took me a few years to actually begin purchasing his stuff.

the villalobos album is excellent ... i struggle with the house subgenres, but it's like a mellowed out daft punk (LOVE the vocoders on track 1) with IDM sensibilities. i believe "microhouse" is the term.
as little as the strokes album offers for a new sound, i still find myself wanting to listen to it again and again. damn catchy.
only listened to the menomena record a couple times, but it's very impressive. really fun + inventive ... would love to see these guys live.....

The Strokes "Room on Fire" - yea, I'll go ahead and give it a thumbs-up... I really wasn't expecting any monumental change anyway.
Shins "Chutes Too Narrow" - Now this one I'm drawn to unlike their first effort. I thought Oh, Inverted showed flashes but Chutes is much tighter and more enjoyable

David Bowie, Hunky Dory
British Sea Power, The Decline of British Sea Power
I picked out these 3 without any ulterior intention when I woke up this morning but realize that's a little funny since they are all vocally similar.
About to listen to...
Maxeen, Maxeen (McGathy tells me to keep The Police, The Pixies, and Afghan Whigs in mind as I listen.)
Slomo Rabbit Kick, Bass Monster Lives in the Bass Forest (Don't know anything about this but I'll avoid the obvious guesses for now.)
Slipstream, Transcendental (Mark Refoy's -of Spiritualized/Spaceman 3 fame- project. McGathy namedrops Robyn Hitchcock, Luna, and Echo & the Bunnymen...all of which I'm wary of. Besides, McGathy compares every group to Spaceman 3; I'm sure they masturbated over this one.)
Cex, Maryland Mansions (Know about Cex and don't really have a developed opinion on him yet, but I'm not really looking forward to this one, either.)

Highly recommend the new Explosions in the Sky. I think it's their best yet and $11 on vinyl is a steal...less means you have no excuses.
The Books is only meh. I get bored w/ them after a little while so I can't really give you an accurate gauge of how it compares to Thought for Food. I never listen to either for very long.
And on the other side of it, I also highly suggest the latest DMST. I suppose I'm something of a fanboy of them, though. If you enjoyed & Yet & Yet, I think you'll definitely dig this'un. They've such a great sound and they run like hell w/ it.

I'd looooooove to see them live... They released it themselves. I ordered it direct from New Zealand from www.SmokeCDs.com but I just checked and they don't have it listed anymore. :( However, I just checked Echomusic, another on-line store in NZ, and they have it listed here (http://www.echomusic.co.nz/index.isams?page=detail&pid=60330). BTW, there's also a live EP called Slush Fund that came out in 2001. There were only 500 made but it's definitely worth seeking out. David plays piano instead of guitar on several songs. Here's (http://www.arc.org.nz/arclife/info.html#theclean) some info on it.

the rapture - echoes
menomena - i am the fun blame monster
the ganja kru - super sharp shooter
hieroglyphics - full circle
got the london elektricity album today ... it's one of the better drum n bass artist albums (vs. mixes) i've heard in a long time. rarely are they so consistent. the hieroglyphics is also really cool ... there's a song built around a sample of bjork's "human behavior" that is brilliant.
the menomena album is really excellent. will probably be on my year-end top 10 list. though i think prefuse 73 and the rapture will probably battle it out for the top spot. we'll see ... still a month left.

you should check out !!!'s full length, it is fucking spectacular
i don't know why there isn't more talk about it-- i think pitchfork gave it a 2.5 rating or something
and from the looks of the 'guilliani' single their new effort should be equally, if not more totally awesome, than their s/t
and they seem like they would be an incredible group to see perform
anyways, what i've been listening to the past couple of days:

stereolab- abc sessions
sonic youth- daydream nation
gorky's zygotic mynci- introducing...
flaming lips- clouds taste metallic
ramones- ramones mania
basement jaxx- kish kash
yeah yeah yeahs- machine ep
the 'machine' ep was put together pretty poorly, but the tracks are pretty decent. i saw them a couple nights ago and it was a blast-- that karen o puts on quite a show
also, the 'machine' ep was printed as a 10"-- but i think it could have fit on a 7". am i just being stupid or did they do this for marketing reasons or personal reasons or what?

yeah i saw them this summer and was really impressed. been wanting to check out the EP and album since then, but still haven't gotten around to it. i should - also liked out hud live, and i dig their album quite a bit.
i'm a big fan of that stereolab collection, disc 2 especially. love the versions of "international colouring contest" and "cybele's reverie," and the sound-dust songs sound much improved to me.

Yeh, I've been meaning to check out that !!! LP but have remained behind the curve on it. I keep seeing it in the local record store; just never take the time to pick it up.
Also saw Out Hud w/ Le Tigre on the Bands Against Bush Tour (w00t) on Sunday night and they lit up the place. Thank you Mr Knobtwiddler (either Justin Vandervogen or Nic Offer) for giving me dance moves to steal. It was a weird set, though - none of that sweet funk-guitar from S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. or any of the songs, for that matter. Some of the bass lines sounded a little familiar, but they even had singing. Threw me for a curve. [Note: I haven't heard the series of 7"s and 12"s they released prior to their LP, so I just assumed they were an all instrumental band.]
And god-damn, thank you, you weirdos in Animal Collective for re-releasing this 2xCD. "April and the Phantom" from Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished is a prime cut of a song. I haven't even gotten to Danse Manatee yet because STGSTV has floored me so thoroughly.
earl grey
11-25-2003, 11:26 AM
i forgot about that - i saw out hud live first, and liked the show enough to get the album. but you're right, there was some singing live that's nowhere to be found on the album. i actually prefer the album to the show - live, it was just about the grooves, and it's still about the grooves on S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. but there's a lot more little stuff going on that they don't pull off live.
i also cannot imagine a more annoying album title to type in.

IMHO, skip it. The music's OK enough, but the singer is the most annoying frontman I think I've ever heard. The lyrics sound like he made them up right before they recorded, but not in a cool off-the-cuff Malkmussy way. Just like "oh, OK, we need lyrics.. um.. this song's gonna be about some asshole I hate.. yeah! OK, let's lay down some tracks!" And they're really high in the mix, so you can't avoid them.
I really like the Out Hud/!!! split 12" on Zum/GSL. Out Hud don't sound like the wannabe party joke band they are now, and !!! have a side-long song that really moves along and evolves nicely. I haven't heard the new 12" on Touch & Go, which I've heard is better than the s/t LP, but as far as I'm concerned, all you need from those bands is that split 12".
that's just me though. I have little/no love left for Out Hud in their current form, and !!! needs to lose the fucking singer, or just bury him in the mix.
And god-damn, thank you, you weirdos in Animal Collective for re-releasing this 2xCD. "April and the Phantom" from Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished is a prime cut of a song. I haven't even gotten to Danse Manatee yet because STGSTV has floored me so thoroughly.
goddamn is right. I got STGSTV when it was released under the "Avey Tare & Panda Bear" name, and fell in love. the two Animal Collective releases before the reissues of STGSTV/Danse, Campfire Songs and Here Comes The Indian are tremendous as well, if you haven't heard them. the former is all acoustic, really pretty in a super fucked up way. kind of like STGSTV without the synth swoops and drums. HCTI is more freewheeling, lots of screaming and droning, no real song structure, but just plain awesome.
I have yet to hear Danse Manatee but I hear its more like the HCTI, than the more songy stuff. I have no idea though. you'll have to let me know. I need to get that 2CD reissue, though I already have half of it. But its the only way I'll be able to get my hands on DM at this point, as the Catsup Plate version of the CD is waaaaaaay outta print.

Yeh, I've heard Campfire Songs and own Here Comes the Indian, but STGSTV blows them both out of the water as far as I'm concerned. Agreed. The Clearlakes disc isn't really divided half-good/half-bad; I just get extremely bored w/ it around the midpoint.
I've only heard 2 Sufjan Stevens songs but both were very good. I just don't have the funding to make the purchase.

Excellent recommendations...thanks will check out.
Menomena is said to be experimental indie, Clearlake along the lines of good british pop/rock(?).
Before i buy, what is the vibe of Sufjan Stevens?
And in local corner, here are some recommended (by me atleast) 2003 Australian releases in case they mysteriously appear in the racks of your record stores:
Architecture In Helsinki - Fingers Crossed (Trifekta)
Bluebottle Kiss - Come Across (Non-Zero)
Machine Translations - Love on the Vine EP (Spunk)
or actually better yet the sublime:
Machine Translations - Happy (2002 LP, Spunk)
The Sleepy Jackson - Lovers (EMI)
Worth a listen, but proceed with caution, most uneven.
AVOID:
Jet (you know the rest I'm sure...)

I think the Clearlake album works tremdously well as a whole, especially everything around "Just Off the Coast."
as for Menomena, I have listened to the album once and wasn't impressed at all. maybe I should go back and listen again.
another really good tip Pitchfork had was the Cyann and Ben album. the only way to order it is from their French Label, but I got it off SoulSeek and will be definitely plucking down the money for an actual copy. it's very similair to the last Rachel's album, except a little more successsful, I think.

Re: Clearlake. I really like the opening salvo, but, after those first four tracks, it leaves me cold.
Re: Menomena. It's got a lot of slow-growing melodies that, if you take the time to let the seeds be planted, will stay in your head for days. The definition of "a grower."

And what is yr new avatar? It kinda looks like the cover of the Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished/Danse Manatee re-issue, but I know that isn't it.

The percussion, but particularly the unexpected bass drum parts, soon after a rather sweet melody remind me of Portishead.
Re: the avatar, it's me and a buddy singing karaoke in Japan. It was a rather awkward situation actually. Many sakes into it, we chose to sing "Born In The USA" as a duet. Some of the lyrics which we didn't realize were actually in the song are rather off color, especially when expressed to Asians from that region. Imagine one's embarassment in such a situation.

The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
This is probably my pick for the best album of this year. I loved "Oh, Inverted World" but this has surpassed it now that I've had some time with it.
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
Elbow - Cast Of Thousands

I just picked up Enjoy Your Rabbit, his 2001 CD.
Its about as different as I could imagine. It seems on listening about halfway through (its about 80 minutes long) that its all instrumental, and all the songs are based on the Chinese Zodiac. horns and keys and all the usual stuff you'd expect, but over a bed of some fucked up electronic squawking that's sort of in Kid 606 territory.
Either way, just a heads up that its really interesting, and further makes me realize that he's just plain super awesome, but its nothing like Michigan.
Also been listening to the Fall Totally Wired 2CD set all day. I'm feeling kinda jittery now..
Yeah. I dl'ed Enjoy Your Rabbit out of curiosity, but don't think I'll be purchasing that one in the near future. Not bad, but not something I'd be listening to with any regularity.

Sufjan Stevens - Enjoy Your Rabbit CD
Animal Collective - STGSTV/Danse Manatee 2CD

Silver Jews - American Water
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
On its way from Insound:
Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
That Menomena album.

you know what else I love? Polvo. last night I played at high volumes:
Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles LP
Polvo - Cor-Crane Secret LP
Polvo - Exploded Drawing 2LP
and it was really awesome. Today's Active Lifestyles especially.
and today:
V/A - A Tell-Tale Sign of Earworm 2CD
V/A - Love Peace and Poetry: Brazilian Psychedelic Music CD
The Orange Alabaster Mushroom - Space and Time: A Compendium of... CD

sufjan stevens - greetings from michigan
ricardo villalobos - alcachofa
michael mayer - immer
belle and sebastian - dear catastrophe waitress
spacemen 3 - perfect prescription
v/a - africafunk
d/l'ed the sufjan stevens album after all the recent discussion here. it's quite good ... the damian jurado meets stereolab description is dead on. reminds me of badly drawn boy a bit as well. track 8 - "detroit, lift up your weary head" i believe - is really fantastic.
