i'm listening to this now and like it a lot more than the first mp3. more sabbath than metallica, more umph than shred. so which do i use as a barometer for their album?

Definitely "Death" - "Evil" was recorded in a separate session and added late to the record, but for some reason we thought it would make a good intro.
I wonder if the 160 bitrate MP3s aren't helping this record. Believe it or not, it all sounds HEAVY and was recorded with plenty of bass.

Having heard the whole album now, I'd have to say the MP3s are, unfortunately, doing it a disservice; it's much thicker and heavier "in the flesh."
I'd also say that, while the MP3s are reminiscent of Metallica and Black Sabbath, the album as a whole primarily sounds like Angel Witch (this is not a bad thing, by any means, as their first album is one of the finest of the NWOBHM).
I'll definitely have to pick up that first EP and y'all send 'em down South, ya' hear?

Interesting Mr. HCI (pleasure meeting you at last the other day) - you're the second person to have brought up Angel Witch.
I've never heard them - but I do remember my desk neighbor at lower sixth-form comprehensive in Cambridge in 1980-81 compulsive writing their logo all over his notebooks (along with those of Motorhead, Judas Priest and other worthies of the time).
which record do you recommend?
everyone else: we'll re-encode the MP3s. They do sound like shit for some reason. The album doesn't.

The only Angel Witch stuff I have is the eponymous debut, which is fantastic, and a collection of early demo trax and live stuff called Sinister History. They apparently went through some massive lineup changes after the debut and I've not heard any of the later material. They're still around, I think.
The debut is quite Maiden-esque but AW started playing in '78, so it may be more appropriate to say that classic (i.e., non-suck/non-Brucey) Maiden is AW-esque, rather than the other way 'round. BTW, make sure you get the CD version of the debut with all the bonus tracks from contemporary singles. It's all pretty great.
