View Full Version : Ectoslavia - Bag o' Bones
Watching the Pavement DVD, I discovered the roots of Pavement with Ectoslavia and Bag o' Bones. Is there any way to listen to these bands? Did they ever put out any 7-inches or anything, or were both bands purely garage projects and never relased anything?
It would be mighty cool to hear something by either of these bands.
Maybe Matador can release a new album entitled "The Roots of Pavement" or something and it could contain various pre-pavement obscure stuff (some Joos stuff as well?) Just a half-assed thought.
But really, is there any way to hear either of these bands?

mr. malkmus, mr. nastanovich & mr. berman were all dj's for uva's radio station, wtju, as you know from watching the dvd. the radio station has tapes of ectoslavia recordings that they've played before in the past, esp. when they host their pledge drives & feature pavement shows.
the ectoslavia recordings are nothing special at all--of interest only for historical reasons. i have a tape buried away somewhere of some ectoslavia tracks, but they sound pretty horrendous & cacophonous, such to the point where i'm never inclined to listen to 'em again.
So are the Ectoslavia tapes just basically feedback and noise? Or are there discernable song structures and actual melodies, singing etc...?
Sounds like they are nothing special, and I'm not the biggest fan of noise music (really ain't that hard, try it sometime), but I'm mainly interested for historical reasons as you said.

as nearly as i can recall--and the last time i listened to the stuff was like in 1995--it was one big wall of feedback and noise. maybe a little static-y orchestration overdubs thrown in... i only have like fifteen minutes of their recordings, but that fifteen minutes is plenty...

ectoslavia had a couple of freenoise collages on an old tape comp. likewise, bag o' bones had 1 track released on a tape comp as well.

Lakespeed is a pre-pavement band that you can hear a few songs from. I don't know where to find such things nowadays, but I downloaded prolly an EP's worth a couple years ago.

mc new was involved as well as the other, more frequently mentioned culprits.

i thought mcnew didn't really have much to do with the band though. like he was with them for a month or less or something.
