How can Best Buy sell the record for 9.99 when it appears that you guys can't even sell it that cheap? Does it really come down to volume?

the cost to a distributer (like Best Buy or your local record store) is much less than the list price, usually around 4-6 dollars. so they're still making a profit.

It comes down to discounts and co-op advertising.
The price is a bit higher than what you quote, js. Margin and of course loss-leading (sell CDs cheap to sell expensive washing machines) also play a role.

my corner best buy was actually sold out of 'antics' today. crazy.
eg,
if you want to support mom n pop, sound fix (williamsburg) has it for $9.99 too.

i was wondering if i'd get called out on the best buy thing - i live on the UES, so best buy is actually the only "record" store near me. it's a shame. (what the UES lacks in culture, it makes up for in cheap rent + central park. emphasis on the former.) i'll prolly just pay regular price next time i'm at kim's or OM...

You would think that this would amount to anti-competitive practices.
Didn't Wal-Mart get sued by the gov't for doing the same thing with pharmaceuticals?

no no, it's fully deserved. i get shit regularly. though ppl usually are quiet after they've been to my place ... i'll practically need to double my rent to improve my apartment. and i'm close enough to the express, the met, and the park that it works. one day my landlord will come to his senses and i'll be priced out.
but yes, the UES sucks.

Pharmaceuticals (over the counter I guess)? I haven't heard about that.
Co-oping for price and positioning is standard throughout retailing in the US... every time you see anything in a special position, in supermarket, hardware store, bookstore, whatever - on a special table, in an endcap (end of an aisle), by the register... trust me, it was paid for.
