If you're just looking for record reviews and the occasional interview, markprindle.com (http://www.markprindle.com) is your man.

you're kidding, right?
Dude, if you can't see the brilliance in what Prindle's doing, there's no hope for you.
I'm not familiar with that site... what's brilliant about it, or according to johansen lack of brilliance?

Is there really a need to review Linkin Park? Do we really want to read what some guys thinks of music like that? I don't nor do I see anything genius in it.

Splendid (http://www.splendidezine.com)
Sponic (http://www.sponiczine.com/)
This may not be quite what you all are looking for, as he's not really going to write about "new" or "current" stuff unless it somehow strikes his fancy, but who knows you might like it. I sure do.

The man responisble for this, Jay Hinnman, used to put out the sorely missed fanzine Superdope. I for one am quite glad to see him return in some form or another.

(just 2 Ns in Hinman btw)...
superdope was one of the better zines 10-odd years ago, i had the luck and pleasure of talking with jay quite a lot during the time (circa the brainbombs/gories/fly ashtray/come issues) and he turned me on to quite a bit of new music and introduced me to some friends which eventually led me to moving up to northern california where i still am today. i know that he got married and dropped out of the scene for quite some time but i'm superglad that he's back and that people are taking notice of his writing.
his interview with the gories is maybe the height of rock and roll writing in my book.

Am I the only one that likes Buddyhead's (http://www.buddyhead.com) music reviews?

After a brief once-over just now on Dave's recommendation, Agony Shorthand looks to be the shit.

some of their reviews are absolute genius, though I sincerely hope no one sends them any of our records. I mean, we can dish it out but we can't take it.
3 examples of the buddyhead thing:
Jesse Malin
The Fine Art Of Self Destruction
Artemis
Jesse should have called this record 'The Fine Art Of Boring The Shit Out Of Travis Keller And Any Other Record Reviewer Who Isn't A Total Dipshit'. Cuz Jesse has perfected that fine art to the max.
--Travis Keller
The Donnas
Spend The Night
Atlantic
I'm calling the Donnas out on some shit. These girls have put out like 17 albums with lyrics about "partying" and "getting down with dudes", but they're all either married or total homebodies. Wussup with that? I don't need to re-iterate another Donnas review, especially seeing as how this stuff doesn't differ vastly from older Donnas stuff I've heard. (except for this time around, I did happen to notice a shitload more of cowbell than before. COWBELL EVERYWHERE.) Songs about "guys" and parties and stuff that sounds like Motley Crue. Disregard the current trend that embraces bad 70's and 80's culture, and the notion that glam rock is "cute" and "cool". it's not. It totally fucking blows. If Bill Hicks heard this he'd say, "Oh great, now there's an ALL GIRL version of shit music I'll never listen to."
--Aaron Icarus
Raveonettes
Whip It On
The White Stripes beat these guys to the punch by about four records on the whole guy and girl, two person, low fi band thing. Sorry dudes, you lose.

I don't need to hear anymore of their music to know that it's not for me. It could be used as an excellent sleep aid.

re: buddyhead
Their reviews are funny, but their gossip section is even funnier. I would not do it justice to cut and paste anything...but if you insist:
"Obviously we’re on the verge of a new Limp Shitskit record, cause the “English language revolutionist”, Fred Durst went on Howard Stern and told the world something that we already knew… that he banged that coke slut Brittney Spears and that she’s got a hairy burger. He also spewed some Neanderthal like lyrics from his upcoming album that went like this: "I have 20 eyes in my head/ Cause I'm a Misfit” and on a separate song “3....2....1 Errrrrghhh, Here we go again/Right now, let's go/Me and you, toe to two/So we can rock, we can roll/Here we go again/I'm addicted to crackin' skulls when punks, start, static.” Wow, what can you say other than we’re about as excited for this record as we are for smashing our dicks with hammers, or a worldwide Ebola spread. Those lyrics read like a “slow” drooling 12 year old’s poetry would after sitting through WWF Raw. If you want to go visit fat Fred and see for yourself the fucking disaster of a record that will undoubtedly be the new Limp Bizkit, head down to Sound Track Studios in New York on 936 Broadway. Bring rocks… make sure they’re heavy. Oh, and you might as well give them a call over there and see if you can get Freddy on the horn. (212) 420-6010. "
Isn't that like next door to Matador's offices?
Anyway, the rest of it is at http://www.buddyhead.com/gossip/ and it is always funny. My friend once called Suge Knight's direct line as per their recommendation but he got freaked out and hung up before saying anything.

Matador does not condone or encourage calling someone a coke slut. Perhaps this was a reference to Ms. Spears' former status as a Pepsi spokesperson.
That said, I think we are all in agreeance that Fred Durst should be stopped as soon as possible.

I 'spose i probably should've read the excerpt a little more carefully before posting it, but it is fairly representative of what is to be found over there.
Regarding webzines more along the lines of those discussed earlier, i'll throw down for http://www.stylusmagazine.com
Regarding print magazines...i just picked up a copy of Harp Magazine and was pleasantly surprised. Cat Power on the cover...Will Oldham interview within. I haven't seen many other nice-looking glossy magazines covering this kind of stuff.

936 Broadway and 625 Broadway might seem to be close to one another but in Manhattan terms they are in entirely different neighborhoods... probably a mile or so apart.

That kind of humor is right up my alley. Anyone who mocks Fred Durst and his OG talent is a friend of mine.
I bet Rob Mitchum thinks highly of Fred's musicianship.

And I'm also quite sure they gave Interpol a negative review.

Check out the neato "search" feature I just uncovered.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion / Plastic Fang
Matador
Cat Power / The Covers Record
Matador
Techno Animal / The Brotherhood of the Bomb
Matador
Boards of Canada / Music Has The Right To Children
Matador
Mogwai / Come On Die Young CD
Matador
Cornelius / Cornelius Remixes (Double LP)
Matador
Mogwai / Rock Action & My Father My King e.p.
Matador

There, the list of Matador releases that have been reviewed...for some reason, Interpol didn't show up.

Interpol was not really reviewed apparently, but "Turn Out The Bright Lights" was included as one of their worst albums of 2002.
I'm quickly losing energy giving a shit about what a reviewer thinks. This kind of talk is nothing but reviewer-Strokes-backlash-syndrome. It's expected that some will flock to other NY bands and others will shun them. In any case, the comparison to the Strokes is nothing short of absurd. Fuck 'em.
Here's what they had to say:
Interpol - Turn Out The Bright Lights
Oh groovy, the music sounds like throwaway Strokes songs, and the vocals sound like a bad Ian Curtis impersonation. Did we mention these guys are from NEW YORK and dress SNAPPY?! WHO FUCKIN CARES.

well, I'm sure the writers for BuddyHead are all holed up in their office, listening to Le Shok on repeat or something.
I've definitely given up on reviewers. I instead now go on word of mouth and my own two ears, and I've yet to be disappointed.
That site looks great!
I like Buddyhead in the same way that i go for Joe Beningo over Mike Francesa at WFAN. Or Mark Kriegel over Mike Lupica. Show me some passion, they don't all have to win the school essay.
Sure you can always go there, but fuck it, another classic:
The All American Rejects
The All American Rejects
Dreamworks
I can’t tell you how bummed I am that these guys are big. Not only does this band totally suck but now Dirk’s rich. Anyhow, I’ve got a story for this one. When I used to live over in Silverlake in that house with Rama, this band actually stayed at our house cuz Rama hangs out with bands like this. The only things I remember about them are that they looked like they were about 14 and one of them walked into my room while I was listening to Led Zeppelin and actually asked what I was listening to. That’s my review, cuz that’s what this band sounds like; 14 year olds who have never heard Led Zeppelin. Think Dashboard Confessional meets Sum 41. No thanks. Attention label people who offered this band tons of cash… YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING TO AN EVIL FAR GREATER THAN YOU UNDERSTAND AND IN THE PROCESS YOU ARE STRANGLING MUSIC, ART, AND CREATIVITY. FUCK OFF AND DIE PIGGYS.
