Chan Marshall stops time. She sits at a piano or lays
her guitar across her lap, and whether it’s a
noisy club overflowing with drunks or a coffee house
full of laptoppers, Chan Marshall draws all the attention
in the room and makes the world stop spinning. As Cat
Power, Marshall’s music seems to rise from nowhere,
envelop the room, then vanish; listeners know they’ve
been hit by something but they’re not sure what.

Cat Power & The Dirty Delta Blues - Supporting Interpol
At MSG
How do you get to Madison Square Garden? Practice, practice
or the A, E or C train. If you're aspiring blues rocker
James Dolan, you wait for your dad to buy the joint.
But if you're Chan Marshall and her world class backing
ensemble, you accept an invite from friends and ex-labelmates
Interpol to lay waste to the World's Most Famous Arena

Tickets are on sale now. And if you think they're expensive, you won't believe what Lombardi and I paid to see the Riddick Bowe/Andrew Golota riot.

2/09/07 Cat Power ranks high in Pazz & Jop '06!
The Village Voice's Pazz and Jop poll for this year has been released, and 3 Matador artists put in top 20 showings:
#11 Cat Power-The Greatest
#14 Belle & Sebastian-The Life Pursuit
#18 Yo La Tengo-I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass
Plus five other Matador releases rank elsewhere on the list, bringing this year's Mata-total to a whopping eight. As this evidence makes clear, they love us in Deadbird, Arizona, or wherever it is the Voice has been outsourced to these days.
1/30/07 Short notice is better than no notice: Cat Power all over NYC
Not one, not two, but three Cat Power events are planned for this weekend in Manhattan. First up--Friday, February 2nd at the Museum of Modern Art is this shindig:
PopRally presents Doug Aitken's "sleepwalkers" Happening, featuring a performance by Cat Power.
This event, hosted by Doug Aitken and PopRally, includes a reception, musical performances by Cat Power and street drummers Ryan Donowho and Hishan Bharoocha, storytelling by Melissa Plaut, and other surprise guests. A unique commissioned poster, created for the event by the Chicago artist Mat Daly in collaboration with Doug Aitken, will be distributed to guests who attend.Attendees are encouraged to visit Doug Aitken: sleepwalkers before the event. Presented by MoMA and the New York-based public art organization Creative Time, sleepwalkers is a major public artwork comprising eight large-scale moving images projected onto six of the Museum's exterior walls, enlivening the building's architecture with the nocturnal journeys of five city dwellers played by Tilda Swinton, Donald Sutherland, Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Seu Jorge, and Ryan Donowho. The exhibition is on view nightly, January 16-February 12, from 5:00 until 10:00 p.m., and is visible from various vantage points around the Museum, on Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth streets, and in The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. The Sculpture Garden is open to the public free of charge during these nightly projections.Tickets are $10 and are available via TicketWeb. A small number of tickets are also available at the lobby information desk at MoMA. Tickets and photo identification will be required for admittance. Tickets are limited and will not be sold at the door.
As if hobnobbing with the art intelligentsia weren't enough for one weekend, Chan is following it up with a two night solo stand at the Hiro Ballroom on February 4th and 5th. The 4th is sold out, but at last check there are still tickets for Monday's show, so if you get a move on, you can score some HERE.
1/17/07 Cat Power vs. the divas at the Brit Awards
That's right, peoples. Cat Power has been nominated for a BRIT Award in the Best International Female category. For our US readers, the BRIT awards are kinda like the UK version of the Grammys. Traditionally the domain of millions-selling pop stars, Cat Power has manged to get onto the nomination list by…..well, we're not sure. We're not in the habit of assuming that artists deserving awards might actually get them. We're dumbfounded, in fact, given her competition.
She's up against: Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Pink and Nelly Furtado.
Surely it can't be that industry bigwigs have finally realised that they should give awards to, y'know, really great artists? I mean, what are the chances of that? The only explanation I can think of is voodoo. Practised by members of the Cat Power bulletin board. We salute you, harbringers of dark magick. Well played.
11/29/06 Cat Power & Dirty Delta Blues
We loved the Memphis Rhythm Band, and the fact that that period of Cat Power history is winding down has left us disconsolate. We'd say unconsolable, but the truth is we're so thrilled with her new group, The Dirty Delta Blues Band, that we've taken an emotional round trip right back to the blissfull Chan-loving state we began in. The new group is a four piece combo made up of Jim White on drums, Judah Bauer guitar, Greg Foreman on keys, and Eric Papparozzi on bass.
Jim White, from The Dirty Three, goes way back with Chan--he recorded Moon Pix with her in 1998. Judah Bauer you should know from his long service in the line of rock & roll with The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. (We've heard it said that he plays guitar with such firey passion that it makes grown men weep, and, in some cases, makes their hair fall out) Greg Foreman is from The Delta '72, and you may have heard of Eric Papparozzi, but I haven't.
In any case, this is a group that looks great on paper, and starting this December you can check them out in person. They'll be playing a few festival dates in Europe before ending the year with a one-two punch in San Francisco and LA on the 30th and 31st. They'll be joined on the California dates by the Flaming Lips and Gnarls Barkley.
In further Cat Power news: Chan was just booked for the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Minehead, UK. The festival takes place over the weekend of 27th-29th April 2007, and the event is being curated by The Dirty Three - other acts confirmed to play are Nick Cave, Low, Bill Callaghan, Spritualized, A Silver Mt Zion..... basically it's going to be awesome. Details on this and any future show can be found on the TOUR PAGE
And yes, that is Chan you hear singing the Cat Stevens song "How Can I Tell You" in the new DeBeers ad. No plans to release it as far as we know, so quit asking.

09/05/06 Relaunch
Edition next Tuesday; iTunes Session live now
Dear Friends,
On September 12, Matador is re-releasing the most recent
Cat Power album, 'The Greatest'. The reissued version
of the album, which you might've already learned via
our print advertisements, feature 3 different slipcase
covers. The album also carries a reduced list price
of $9.98. We'd like to stress the following points:
a) there are no additional songs on this version of
the album
b) though we will not try to stop you from purchasing
the new slipcase edition if you already own 'The Greatest',
this endeavor is really directed at persons who've not
checked out the album yet.
c) said scheme and accompanying fancy art were prepared
with the full cooperation of Chan Marshall.
If you're of the opinion that dropping the list price
on 'The Greatest' is a curious way to reward the serious
Cat Power fans that bought the album the day it came
out, well, you're right. Except we did acknowledge that
portion of the audience with a bonus track on release.
And they got to hear this terrific album for months
and months, which isn't a bad deal, either.
Anyhow, we know this is a sensitive subject for some
of you. We're not intent on gouging Cat Power fans,
but we are trying to be creative and competitive in
a marketplace where it is becoming increasing hard to
maintain the shelf life of a title for more than a couple
of months. We really believe in Chan and are of the
opinion that 'The Greatest' is one of those life affirming
records that we have to get into the hands and heads
of as many people as possible.
For those of you already down with the program, thank
you. Seriously. We hope you'll be as excited as we are
by the contents of the new Cat
Power Live Session, an iTunes
Music Store exclusive, available
today.

08/22/06 iTunes
Session Coming Soon
All the cool kids were doing it. Interpol, The New Pornographers,
Laura Cantrell, and now Pretty Girls Make Graves too.
"Come on," they said. "Anybody who's
anybody is recording exlusive iTunes EPs."
But Cat Power wasn't just anybody. Cat Power had the strength and confidence to think for herself and make her own decisions. Cat Power was also really fucking cool, so September 5th, iTunes will post a Cat Power exclusive live session. It's going to knock your socks off.
07/26/06 Mass demonstrations of Cat Power leave all agog
Chan's recent shows in the US and UK with the Memphis Rhythm
Band have left audiences agog. And we don't use the word "agog"
very often, mostly because we're accused of making it up.
Along with blowing away a largish crowd at Bonnaroo (other
participants: Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus and
The Jicks, J.D. & The Straight Shot), Cat Power has recently
Made The Scene On The Small Screen with knockout performances
on "The
Late Show With David Letterman" () and the BBC's "Later
With Jools Holland." If you move fast, you can see
Chan playing solo tomorrow night:
McCabe's Guitar Shop this Thursday (July 27):
1st show: 8pm doors, 9pm set
2nd show: 10:30 doors, 11pm set
An exclusive Cat Power session for the iTunes Music Store
will be available on September 5. Following that, Cat Power
& The Memphis Rhythm Band are playing the Austin City Limits
Festival on September 15, with a studio taping for PBS' ACL
TV program a few days later. Along with further US dates with and without the Band, Chan is amongst the participants
in a Bob Dylan tribute at Avery Fisher Hall on November 9,
taking part along with Patti Smith and Phillip Glass.
The new video for 'The Greatest's "Lived In Bars" (directed
by Robert Gordon) is available here.
06/01/06 Letterman; London; Lived In Bars
After Chan and the Memphis Rhythm Band's series of triumphant
gigs at Coachella and the rest of the West Coast, the all-new-super-fine
Cat Power revue hits the East Coast next week for a series
of sold out shows. Chan and Teenie Hodges will be performing
on CBS' "Late Night With David Letterman" on Tuesday, June
13.
UK residents should be thrilled to learn that Chan Marshall
and the Memphis Rhythm Band will be performing at London's
luxurious Barbican on June 21, followed by a television broadcast
of two songs during BBC2's "Later With Jools Holland" on June
23. A download-only single of the "Lived In Bars" will be
released on June 26.
05/26/06 UK show; 2 upcoming TV appearances;
Detroit, Montreal
Tons of Cat Power activity: Chan will be playing the
Barbican in London (with full band) on Wednesday, June
21st; she will also be appearing on TV in the US on
June 13th (The Late Show With David Letterman) and in
the UK (airing) on June 23rd (Later With Jools Holland);
the former date with the Paul Shaffer Orchestra, and
the latter with the Memphis Rhythm Band.
She will also be playing festival dates in Detroit (with
full band) and Montreal (solo) in early July.
For all this, see the tours page.

There will be information about refunds available imminently,

Chan is a good friend and a dear member of the Matador
family, and when we have news about future performances,

Istanbul, MP3, 7" single, Cingular commercial
Though we don't have much news to share other than last
month's major announcement about the January release
of 'The Greatest', Chan did make her Instanbul debut
this past week, in addition to sorting out some of the
requisite promo stuff for the forthcoming album. An
MP3
of "The Greatest" is still available for your
previewing pleasure.
Additionally, on December 6, we will be releasing a
7" vinyl single of "The Greatest" b/w
"Hate", available at good retailers everywhere
for only 99 cents. Or preorder it on the Matador

....and
yes, that is the unique sound of Ms. Marshall's voice,
covering the Nerves' "Hanging On The Telephone" is a
widely seen television advertisement for Cingular Wireless.
Though people keep asking us how they can obtain their
own copy of this cover, at present, the only thing we
can suggest is that you purchase a very large TV set,
a digital video recorder...and check out "The Colbert
Report". It won't help you with the Nerves cover, but
at least you'll be entertained.

Green sideman Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy "Flick"

2 songs plus video on 'Matador At Fifteen'
The third in our October trio of comps, reissues and
side projects is a unusual art piece commissioned by
Cat Power in the form of a specially packaged DVD +
CD combination. 'Speaking For Trees: A Film by Mark
Borthwick' centers a nearly 2-hour long film of Cat
Power playing solo outdoors in the countryside. The
experimental filmmaker and visual artist shot it from
a great distance in gloriously grainy color, and recorded
with all the ambient sounds of nature. This cinema verite
piece, in the tradition of Warhol and Wiseman, is a
fascinating document.
The DVD also includes 3 nature films set to music from
'You Are Free,' as well as a CD including a single 18-minute
long unreleased song saga entitled "Willie Deadwilder,"
an outtake from the 'You Are Free' recording sessions.
The DVD and CD are packaged in a slipcase with foldout
digipak and a 64-page perfect-bound book created and
illustrated by Mark Borthwick.
Buy it at the Matador
Store.

There are two Cat Power songs plus a video on the new
'Matador At Fifteen'
compilation: "Free" from the 'You Are Free'

DVD release of experimental film by Mark Borthwick
Experimental filmmaker, photographer and visual artist
Mark Borthwick has completed an elaborate package including
a nearly 2-hour-long film of Cat Power playing solo
outdoors in the countryside. Shot from a great distance
in gloriously grainy color, and recorded with all the
ambient sounds of nature, this film in the tradition
of Warhol and Wiseman is a fascinating document.
The DVD also includes 3 nature films set to music from
'You Are Free', and a CD including a single 18-minute
long unreleased song saga entitled "Willie Deadwilder,"
an outtake from the 'You Are Free' recording sessions.
In a slipcase with foldout digipak and 64-page perfect-bound
book created and illustrated by Mark Borthwick. Scheduled
for October 26 release date.

Recording new album
We've been informed that recording for the new Cat Power
album has commenced at the Atlanta studio Zero Return.
Said studio's propreitors are down with the Bio
Diesel initiative, which sounds like a great way
to reduce our dependency on fuel that isn't vegetable
oil.
More recordings are planned for Barcelona, New York
and Jamaica.

Benefit performance in NYC
Chan just got done doing-her-thing at packed concert
halls in London, Edinburgh, Paris and Rye (mmmm, Rye).
As always, reactions to these performances ranged from
the ecstatic to the downright ornery. We remind you
once again, that Performing Artists Are People, Too.
As noted below, Chan is playing the Peaceable Kingdom
Event in New York this coming Thursday, April 13.
In other benefit news, Chan lends a helping hand in
the effort to Fuck
Cancer, a very cool endeavor designed to raise loot
for a dear friend of the Matador label, Jackie Farry,
along with others battling cancer. Chan will be playing
solo at the Bowery Ballroom on May 11 on a bill including
Har Mar Superstar, Quintron and Miss Pussycat and other
special guests.

Upcoming DVD project
 |
|
We'll be releasing a Cat Power DVD this summer entitled
'A Film By Mark Borthwick' featuring more than 2 hours
of footage shot by Mr. Borthwick, plus a video for "Free"
that none of us have seen. The DVD will be accompanied
by a 40 page book and a bonus CD featuring a new, unreleased
19 minute track.
Don't forget that Chan has a bunch of solo shows in the
UK and France starting in two weeks time; please check
the tour dates section.
01/28/04
Solo dates in NYC and
London
Check the tours page for details
on 3 upcoming solo gigs in NYC (Feb) and 1 in London
(March).
12/15/03
solo dates in the lovely
state of Florida, this week
If you've not heard, Chan Marshall has the following
solo performances scheduled this week:
11/20/03
Hear Cat Power perform on World Café
On Wednesday, December 3rd, hear Cat Power perform on
the World Café with David Dye. The World Café
can be heard on more than 160 stations nationwide. Fans
can find their local station by going to the World Café
website, or they
can listen online Monday to Friday at 2 PM and 1 AM
EST via the WXPN website.
11/05/03
Shortlist results, awards special
Along with Interpol, Ms. Marshall was nominated for
this years Shortlist prize. Performances from Chan and
Interpol can be seen in a one-hour M2 special this autumn,
which should also include some music from the overrated
hack that won the damn thing. Go ahead, call me ungracious.
Chan might not be a sore loser, but I sure am.
09/18/03
Shortlist finalist
Cat Power's 'You Are Free' is amongst the 9 finalists
for the Shortlist
Music Awards. But back in the real world, Chan has
been bringing it to the good people of Australia recently
in her first tour of that country in many a moon. A
European tour with the Dirty Three is planned for later
this year.
05/20/03 European tour;
Later with Jools, new MP3
Currently on her longest European tour ever, Chan Marshall
will be making her UK TV debut this Friday, May 23 on
BBC 2's "Later With Jools Holland". Also appearing that
night are the Electric Six, the Pretenders and our favorite
member of the Power Station, Robert Palmer. An MP3 of
"I Don't Blame You", for those who haven't
bought or downloaded the album, is now available on
themusic page.
04/14/03
Miwa Okumura tells the tale of Chan Marshall making
her network TV debut, and the New Pornographers visiting
NYC:
Carl Newman, Kurt Dahle, and Blaine Thurier of the New
Pornographers are in NYC doing press; at the same time,
Chan Marshall is coming into town for her performance
on CBS's "Late Night With David Letterman" (though since
he is afflicted with shingles, Dave stayed home and
let Paul Shaffer run the show).
We bring the parties together for an evening of karaoke
at our local East Village spot where Takaaki, the manager,
now greets us by first name.
Not exactly a Star Search audition here, but we have
Blaine on one end belting out traditional Japanese pop
songs and on the other end, shock and awe from the audience.
"That white guy is...?? Oh, he's good."
Kurt doesn't sing but supplies good sound effects. Chan
picks Billie Holiday. Carl is concentrating hard on
the song book. It's about 12:40pm and we hear Blaine
saying something like this to Takaaki: "sumimasen, kanojo
(points to Chan who is sitting low in her chair with
her baseball cap covering her eyes), sugu David Letterman
(points to TV monitor)... someone's shouting "I Shot
the Sheriff" until the bar manager cuts her off and
forces everyone to direct their eyes to guest host,
Paul Shaffer, who introduces Cat Power. Inside sources
say he ran over to console her: "It'll be okay, you'll
be alright."
The evening continues and ends with Mr. Newman serenading
us all with a lovely rendition of "Love on the Rocks."
I've got to hand it to them (the mic, that is), these
guys may not be playing the MGM Grand anytime soon,
but they sure do it right.
Chan takes the next flight back meet up with her bandmates
in Athens and the NP guys get airlifted back to Vancouver.
(Management note: we're slashing
the karaoke budget as soon as possible)
03/05/03
media goes nuts, Chan gets good
mileage
As public and press alike continue going ga ga in the
' wake' 'You Are Free''s release, even label management
is having trouble keeping pace. I bought an issue of
Newsweek's international edition the other day hoping
for some definition of which countries are in Donald
Rumsfeld's "Old Europe" and which are in "New Europe",
and instead I was greeted with a half page on Chan Marshall.
Though the article didn't mention anything about the
massive first week sales of 'You Are Free', let's just
pause for a moment to let it all sink in.
OK, that's enough. The Brett Vapnek directed video of
"He War" will be available soon. And the massive Cat
Power tour continues --- check the tour
dates section for details.
02/14/03
And more Cat Power news
With all sorts of wild accolades being tossed around
concerning Chan's forthcoming album, there's an extended
Cat Power tour starting in mid-February (check the tour
dates section). We are happy to welcome the following
talented players to the 2003 Cat Power touring band
:
Will Fratesi - drums
Coleman Lewis - guitar
Margaret White - violin, bass, keyboards.
While in the UK for a promotional visit, Chan recorded
a Peel Session at Maida Vale and the results will be
heard on John
Peel's BBC Radio One show,Wednesday, February 12
(5pm EST). As always, the show can be heard via Real
Player. Since we're on the subject, here's a link to
a particularly good Cat Power site done by a devoted
fan : http://www.moonpix.com.
A previously unreleased Cat Power performance, "Some
Fur", filmed live at Brooklyn's Warsaw last year, can
be found on the DVD version of "Benjamin
Smoke".

Check out the official
mini-site for 'You Are Free'!
Check out the new official mini-site, catpowermusic.com,
which is streaming "You Are Free" song by
song daily starting Monday, February 3rd. This will
culminate in a stream of the entire album from Apple
on Tuesday, February 11th.
11/13/02 'You
Are Free' (though we will be charging money)
As mentioned in many respected industry trades and several
well-written websites (and, uh, Pitchfork too), the
new Cat Power album is called 'You Are Free' and shall
be released on CD and double vinyl on 18 February, 2003.
Recorded throughout 2002 in Los Angeles with engineer
Adam Kaspar (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters). We think this
is the most confident & powerful work of Chan Marshall's
musical career, easily the deepest, most varied album
she's delivered to date. We'll have more details shortly.

07/21/00 Yo La Tengo / Cat Power webcasts
this weekend
What were the great rock festivals of all time?
Woodstock (I, II or III)? The HORDE tour? The US Festival?
Monsters Of Rock? The Up In Smoke Tour? Roskilde? A
Nice Weekend In Upper Volta? All of the above have their
good points and bad, but none of em can compare
to the ongoing Digital Club Festival, an event that
allows fast-talking people weve never met to cash
in on the notoriety of our more popular bands. Since
you, the loyal fans of fill-in-the-blank, get to see
these webcasts, everyone is a winner (except perhaps,
the people at the gig who cant see around the
roving camera crews).
July 24, 10pm EST, Yo
La Tengo @ Maxwells, Hoboken NJ
Will be archived for broadcast on demand for 3 months.
July 24, 10pm EST, Cat
Power @ 40 Watt Club, Athens, GA
Will be archived for broadcast on demand for 3 months.
07/19/00 This Thursday
night, Cat Power will be in session on the John Peel
program on BBC Radio
One (97-99 FM), from 10pm UK time to Midnight. Chan
Marshall will be performing a selection of covers that
didn't quite make it onto 'The Covers Record,' taped
at Maida Vale just a few weeks ago. If you're not near
a radio or live elsewhere on the planet, you can tune
in via Real Audio.
03/27/00 Paths
Of Victory from the new Cat Power
LP/CD, The Covers Record, will be available
as a free MP3 download,
starting tomorrow, March 7. We read a very compelling
letter from an intelligent young person who urged us
to a) give away more free music, b) revamp the web site
and c) pass along a personal message to Sid Fernandez.
We are doing the best we can with "a", averaging almost
one new MP3 every week (giving or take, uh, a few weeks).
"B", is an ongoing project that will come to a skidding
halt as soon as we can agree on which shade of fuscia
we like best. As far as "c" is concerned, were
very sorry, but we cant help you out.
Theres a one-off Cat Power show in London on March
14 (Drill Hall), followed by North American dates that
youll probably want to attend.
01/21/00 Chan Marshall will be on
the cover of the Feb/March issue of Mean Magazine, out
Feb 21. Which will come as thrilling news for those
of us who arent patient enough for Grand Royal
to start publishing again. And dont even get us
started on Popsmear. Non Phixions center
spread in Martha Stewart Living has been cancelled until
further notice.
12/03/99 Cat Power has a new record for yall.
Shes calling it The Covers Record
because, yes, its all covers. It features Chans
take on 12 tracks by The Rolling Stones, Michael Hurley,
Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, Nina Simone and Cat Power
among others. Covering herself? Yup. Thats how
good itll be. Due in stores March 21, 2000.
In the meantime, Cat Power will be touring in Australia.
Mushroom will be re-releasing Moon Pix in
anticipation of the tour with these three bonus tracks:
"Kingsport Town" - Radio Aligre Sessions France 10/98;
"Schizophrenias Weighted Me Down" - from the UK
CD5 of "Nude As The News"; "Sea Of Love" - from Everything
Is Nice. Those of us outside the Southern Pacific archipelago
will have to claw our way through the import bins. [...]
